Hello,
Do you know if Adobe Creative Suite ver.1.3 is compatible with Tiger?
I am buying a PowerMac G5 2.0 or 2.3 and was wondering if the OS is compatable with this CS ver., before installing and encountering problems.

Thanks so very much!
Sincerely,
Cathy

Cathy,

According to Adobe, you will need to update to Creative Suite version 2.0.

From Adobe's web site:
Adobe and Apple have worked closely together through the development of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and Adobe Creative Suite 2 to ensure that our software is fully compatible with Tiger. After rigorous testing by Adobe engineers, Adobe Creative Suite 2, as well as its individual components (Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Illustrator CS2, Adobe InDesign CS2, Adobe GoLive CS2, and Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional), are now certified as compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

There is a rebate if you have the premium version.
http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/main.html

I went a bit further to check for incompatibilities with Tiger and found this:

Reader report: "There is a potential issue installing Adobe Creative Suite on Mac OS X 10.4. If the install volume is formatted as "case-sensitive" the Adobe Creative Suite installer will not install."

I have also found other bugs with version 1.3 -
A reader reports: "Since installing Tiger [...] I can no longer simply double click on a tiff or JPG file made in Photoshop to open it, whether Photoshop is running or not.

There are some work arounds. I found some links here:
http://macintouch.com/tigerreview/incompatibility.html

You have to scroll down to Adobe to check it out. If you feel you can handle these bugs, then by all means install version 1.3.

Dear Cheryl,
Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly and for all the information. The rebate info. is very much appreciated!!!

Just one last question, if you don't mind.
Could I install "Panther" on the same hard drive that has "Tiger"; and then install and run CS 1.3 on "Panther"?

Thanks so much Cheryl!
Cathy

I really appreciate all the time you have gone to answer my questions. You've saved me time, trouble and put $100.00 in pocket at the same time.

Cathy,

You can not install Panther on the same drive as Tiger. You can install Panther on an external drive or a partition. You will be able to start up from either one then.

When you install Tiger, select the Archive and Preserve. Then your applications and home folder will not be touched. Also, remember to Repair Permissions after the install (from Applications>Utilities>Disk utility).

Glad to be of help.

Hello once again Cheryl and thank you.

I am about to buy the lastest PowerMac G5 2.0 or 2.3 soon, as I have mentioned.

Would it be possible to install Panther on a completely new hard drive from the new computer and replace the hard drive with Tiger(pre-installed) with it? Would I encounter problems running Panther due to the new computer's firmwear?

Thank you once again. I am embarrassed to take up so much of your time, and would not, if it wasn't so important.

Since I am new to Mac, I am not familiar with the "software mechanics". That is why I would like to shy away from partitioning the drive - at this time. I am thinking that installing Panther, from the new computer, on a seperate hard drive would be the easiest method.

Chery, if this is possible, would you please give me a basic set of instructions, or procedures "not to do", or perhaps a web link to installation instructions.

Again many thanks and much appreciated,
Cathy

Cathy,

I am sorry to say that you will not be able to install Panther on the new machine, nor swap drives.
What you can do is purchase a firewire drive. Power it up first (plug in to power), then connect it to the machine's firewire port.
Open Applications>Utilities and start up Disk Utility.
When Disk Utility opens, it will take a few moments for it to bring up all the drives connected to the computer. You will see two icons at the very top left of the window's side bar. This is your internal hard drive. The first one is the actual drive, the second is the formated hard drive that you see on your desktop.
Right under that will be your firewire drive. Click on that icon, then click on the Partition tab. Now you can use the pull down menu to select how many partitions and you can move the middle bar with your mouse to any size.
You need to select Mac OS Extended for the formating - and do not lock the drive.
Now click on the Partition button.

Now the firewire drive is set for installation. I did find a handy Install and setup guide for Panther.
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple...tall_Setup.pdf

And here is a guide to use Panther.
http://www.apple.com/support/panther/

And here is a guide to use Tiger
http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/

You should not be embarrassed, and I hope our forums are giving you some help. And once you have done a partition - as well as any other project on your Mac, you will see how easy it is.

I do have to ask, why is it important to have Panther?

Hi and thanks again!

You asked me "I do have to ask, why is it important to have Panther?".
Well...because I have both Adobe CS Premium - version 1.3 and 2.o.
CS 1.3 was designed to run on Panther and 2.0 on Tiger.
I am studying the software for a possible career in freelancing. I have quite a bit of money invested in training for the CS 1.x versions, and I wanted to learn the software in a logical pattern as well.

Cheryl, in the email before your last one. You mentioned that the drive could be partitioned and by performing a clean install of Tiger and selecting the Archive and Preserve and then Repair Permission after the install from Disk Utility, that that would be an option.

Do I understand correctly that this is now not possible?
Would that be because of the firmwear in the new machines? - just curious.

If installing Panther and then CS 1.3 on a Firwire drive will work, then that is what I shall do. Just a quick confirmation from you, and I shall start looking for a firewire drive and Panther. (and a computer of course)
Super Duper!

Thank you once again for all you time and trouble and the above links. Perhaps in a few years I will be knowledgable enough to offer my services on this site. I would love it!

Take good care Cheryl!
Cathy

Cathy,

I am sorry I confused you. With a new G5, you can not install Panther, even if you did partition the drive. But you can use a firewire drive to install Panther. And yes, it is because of the firmware on the new machine.

What is the present machine you are working on?

Thanks very much Cheryl!

I haven't purchased the PowerMac G5 2 Gig. yet, but it will be soon. During this time, I will be looking for a good firewire drive and Panther OS. I am very appreciative of your help Cheryl, because it is important to me that I work with Adobe 1.3 first and then move on to the CS 2 version on Tiger. Plus I have the benefit of working with two great Operating Systems ( an asset, I am sure, on a resume).

Oh and thank you for that link to installing Panther - Super!
I think I may take you up on your offer of emailing you should I run into complications installing Panther on the firewire drive. Though it seems quite straight forward.

I'm holding off a bit on the purchase of the PowerMac G5 2 Gig. after hearing about IBM's completion of the dual core 970MP processor. My eyes and ears are open for news of the implementation of this processor in the PowerMac G5's, which could be this fall. Though after Steve Jobs announcement of joining up with Intel, one has to wonder if Mr. Jobs will use this IBM processor in the PowerMac.

I can't thank you enough for all you have done for me Cheryl!
Hope you have a wonderful summer and a great year!
All the best,
Cathy
