First of all thanks alot for all your help so far, I used the combo update and finder help is great.
-Recently however, it would appear that online activity is slower. In addition, the computer twice now has gone all black requiring force quitting and for the first time today while using an application the computer froze up in the typical sense of the word when we think of a computer "freezing"... mouse activity cancels, no cursor, gotta restart, etc..

So...
this computer is the g4 laptop quite new that we have been dealing with this whole time and now I have to ask you, what are some anti freezing steps I can take? I know someone that brought up the fact that just traveling on the internet deposits a crapload of info onto your computer, will resetting safari counter this? If there is some program I can download to clean it up or certain files to check for and delete? After asking my mom right now I'm finding that she doesn't know about there being a virus program at all on her computer... I need some laptop maintenance info please!
( :
Thanks Matt

Hi Matt,
the easiest thing you can do is downloading Cocktail or Onyx (be sure you download the correct version for your operating system), and run it... They will do all the routinary maintenance of your Mac.
Tell me if that helps!

hi stefano ( :
thanks alot for the cocktail, regardless of whether or not the problem will be fixed it seems like it was a good idea. Is there any reason speeding up the page loading times in safari would be bad?
I wondered if in general you could give some pointers on using cocktail, like network preferences for an airport connection, some more on journaling and anything I may not have taken care of running the pilot on the program. I'll check out onyx and see if there is anything it offers that cocktail didn't, but some other maintenance tips to go along with cocktail would defenitely be welcome.
As a computer amasses programs and such, does it run slower? basic question I know, but I'm trying to decide whether or not to delete some applications we aren't really using...
Thanks for the help I really do appreciate it in spite of blathering on with questions.

Hi Matt,
I generally use the pilot, with cocktail, 'cause it do exactly what is needed for your computer... in fact it does the cron scripts, which you can also run from the terminal, which are periodic jobs done during the night by Unix operating systems, like OS X... they are performed during the night since Unix machines was born as workstations, and therefore always switched on... since normally you switch off the laptop during the night, you should manually perform this maintenance routine, and cocktail do it for you.. for the airport optimization, I don't have an airport on my iBook, so I don't know what kind of tasks Cocktail performs, but I prefer to manage these things from the System Preferences, since I know what to do... Disk Journaling has a protective effect on the HFS file system, and is normally enabled on your System disk...all the other things are normally managed from the preference menu of each application, and I prefer generally to use this menu...
Onyx offers more options, but you need to know a lot of things to use it correctly, without side effects on your normal usage of the computer... since OS X is a really stable system, the pilot option of cocktail is surely enough for you...

Hey Stefano,
-thanks for the reply and again for the cocktail. I wonder if you might answer one more question, when it comes to actually physiclaly cleaning the laptop, sceen and keyboard and touchpad what should one use? I've been told no alcohol cause it'll damage the screen, but other than that, I'd just love to give it a wipe down with something...
Sincerely Matt

For the screen, I've found good protective tools and cleaners on http://www.radtech.us/ and I think that they could be used on the other plastic parts of the computer... also, be careful with products that claim tu use compressed air... in some cases they use flammable gasses, and they can be very dangerous on computers!
