My wife tried to connect to my computer and a message came up, " Unknown user, incorrect password or log on is disabled. Please retype name & password. She tried several times without no luck. I restarted the computer & went thru the same process getting the same result. I checked Preferences Sharing folder & Personal File Sharing & Printer Sharing are on. Everything else is off. Then checked Network and Location is set to Automatic & Built in Ethernet. In Accounts she is listed as Admin. & bobw as Standard. Not knowing what else to do I rebooted off the Install Disk and ran Repair Disk & Repair Disk Permissions. Then restarted the computer but got the same message. I know that we are entering the correct password. I have gone as far as I can go. I figure there must be something i'm missing.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for using macosx.com!

Try this, boot into your user, goto the users folder on the machine, is her user still listed there?

Thanks,
Jason

Tom,
No probem! Login to her computer with your account. Then go to Macintosh HD, inside there is a folder called Users, go in that folder. What do you see listed in that folder?

Thanks,
Jason

I really don't know nor do I know haw to find out. In the users folder on her computer there is a picture of the home and under it is pmaberry. When I try to connect to her computer from mine the computer shows up as afp://pat-maberrys-computer.local. Is there another place to look for her user name? Sorry I know I'm not much help.

Tom,
You got it, pmaberry should be her username based on what you just told me. What I was looking for was to make sure that her user account was still there, and it is so that is good!

Do you backup this machine?

Tom,
Are you able to see the files in her folder within the Users folder? You should see Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures folders... Open those folders up and see if you can open her files.

Sorry I took so long. I'm on Safari and it crashed twice on me. I finally restarted the computer.

I went in Users, Her folder, Documents I found Microsoft user data I could open it. Also went into Music, nothing there. In Public there was a drop box but nothing in it.
Awaiting orders

Tom,
It sounds like her user account may be corrupted. When you went into Documents there were no files other than Microsoft User Data right?

What about the Pictures folder was there stuff in there?

Jason
No nothing in Documents but Microsoft user Data & Nothing in the Pictures Folder.

Ya something has been corrupted or the folders were moved out by accident. I can give you some command line commands to run to see if files are still in the right location but just hidden if you want?

The other thing you might want to do is look around inside of other folders for random Documents, Pictures, Music folders, as if they were moved out of the location that they should be in.

What version of Mac OS X are you running? You can find out by going to the Apple Menu and clicking About this Mac.

I'm running 10.3.9 on both computers. Guess I can look in other folders but if you would give me the commands and fully explain how to go about running them I'll try that also. I have to go out soon , other commitments you know how that goes but I will work on it tomorrow also and let you know how it goes. If this dosen't work I don't suppose that an Archive & Install off the Install will work will it?
Thanks for all the help so far.

Tom,
Archive & Install unfortunately won't solved the issue. Before I do the command line stuff, I would suggest just doing a search for folders called Documents or Pictures and see if any folders come up with stuff that is hers.

Was there a Library folder in her User folder?

Jason
Yes there is a Libary Folder in her user folder. I'm more than happy to just look for the missing folders first. Commands can come later if needed. If I find them tonight I post you right away. If not I'll be working on it tomorrow and let you know how it goes then.

I did a pretty good search in all the folders I could find and no Documents or Pictures of hers showed up. I just can't understand how this happened. Guess it's more important to know what has to be done to fix the problem. Were do I go from here? I have a party the wife & I are going to tonight and a babyshower tomorrow but I will check for any reply from you sometime tomorrow and maybe tonight also.

Tom,
It seems like somehow her files we corrupted, moved or even deleted by accident. At this point, I am going to open up the ticket for other techs to review and chime in if they have any ideas.

Thank you for all your help. I really don't want to do a clean Install if I can fix the computer some other way. bobw installed several programs on the computer but did not give me the disks. I may have to ask his wife if I can have a look at his computer to see if he has them on it.
