My G4 desktop for some reason won't shut down. It gets stuck and I have to manually shut it down. Recently I reinstalled my OSX oon my lap top and put all the applications from my desktop on the powerbook. Now my powerbook has the same problem. I think it must be something in my application or preferences folder that is not allowing me to shut down or reboot. Do you know how i can fix this problem..
thanks... your website kicks ass!

Hi,
There might be some problems with your file system in your hd. If you can try repairing your drive either from starting from install cd/dvd and choosing disk utility and repair drive or better still, if you happen to have diskwarrior start from that cd and let it repair the file system of your drive.
I had similar problem and it vanished after that, nothing else worked.
Also if you have just copied your programs from one mac to another that might have messed up something in the os. You can try archive and install method from the install dvd (assuming you have panther or tiger) THis wont erase your drive and most of the programs work fine after it, with some youll have to set up preferences again.
But before archive and install try some quick fixes:
Repair permissions
reset pram and pmu (I guess its nvram in powermac..)
Try restarting with pressing shift while starting up->this will boot your mac in to safe mode and runs file system check. Then try restarting normally. If you are now able to shut down normally try shutting down after normal restart-> If in normal restart you cannot shut down then it has something to do with your third party programs and preferences. Then try looking from console and error and crash and system logs what might be the problem. Or when shutting down if it possible, check with activity monitor which program, operation is stalling the shut down process.
So first try:
1. repair hd either with disk utility booted from install dvd or repair with disk warrior
2. Repair permissions
3. reset pram and pmu (you will find info how to do it from apple support.
4. try booting in safe mode
5. archive and install
And between steps check if you are able to shut down properly.
Good luck and tell me how it goes, you can also tell me before trying archive and install if you are unsure about it. It is good idea to backup before it though.
