Hi;
My computer will not shut down or restart. I tried force quit and it doesn't even show up. I opened System preferences and the cursor spins indefinitely and now I cannot quit. I have a graphite 400 mhz iMac w/256 RAM and macos 10.3
Any ideas?
Thank you,
Åge

Is this a usual occurance or has it only happened once or twice?

Thank you William.
This was the first time.
I was afraid to unplug the computer but in the end I tried it and after reconnecting it worked.

Yes, it looks like you had a system crash or a kernal panic. These problems are very common when you use an older computer with Mac OS X.
If this problem happens again, either hold down the 'Power' button on your iMac or unplug it and plug it back in again.
Something that might prevent this problem from happenning again:
In your 'Utilities' folder, open the program called 'Disk Utility'.
On the left side of the screen, there is a list of names, click the one furthermost towards the top of the screen (probably called Macintosh HD).
Then click 'Repair Permissions'.
This should make your computer run a lot faster and be less likely to crash.
Repeat this about every month to keep your computer in top-shape.
Hope this helps,
William
