Hi!

Using VNC, I'm trying to get control my iBook G3 from my 24" iMac Intel but I keep getting this answer: "Connection error Exception connecting to 192.168.1.5:0:
Connection refused".

On the other hand, if I try to get control of an iMac G4 from the same iMac Intel, everything works fine. I can even run Mac OS 9 on the G4 from the Intel. That's great.

Since the G4 is not mine and I am soon gonna be left with only the iBook and the Intel, can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
I am not savvy at all in that matter. I ended up succeeding after numerous trials and errors.

The iBook G3 runs OS 10.3.9 at 500 MHz and the Intel runs 10.4.7 at 2.16 GHz.

Thank you so much for your help!

Is your iBook's firewall on? If so (and having it on is definitely the best choice), you need to open a port for the VNC connection to work. If this is the case, I'm happy to walk you through the process if you want.

What VNC application(s) are you using for server and viewer?

Hi Ben!

Thank you for your prompt response. My reply took a little more time because I wanted to experiment some more with my connections. I found things that look surprising to me.

1- First, to answer your question, no, neither of my iMac Intel and my iBook G3 has a firewall on.

2- The VNC applications I am using are Chicken of the VNC and VNCViewer.

3- Here is where I get lost. Remember, I told you I had no trouble connecting between my iMac Intel and another iMac G4? Well, if I start cold and turn on these 2 computers, both having only the finder on and no network setup done, if the only application I turn on is VNCViewer on either computer, I can control the other computer instantly !

This shows me how I don't really understand a thing about this VNC phenomenon. At first, I thought I had to have the server run on one computer and the client run on the other... Not at all! ... and maybe I needed to establish a network contact between the two which does not seem to be necessary either!

And no matter what I do between the iMac Intel and the iBook G3, and even though my setup seems identical to the setup between the iMac Intel and the iMac G4, it never works!

So I don't know what to add, Ben! It is so simple with one set and so impossible with the other. Hope you can solve that for me.

Thank you in advance!

I wonder if this has something to do with the Apple Remote Desktop support built into Mac OS X. I'm not so familiar with that, though, but before I reopen your question, I shall express my consideration that the problem is that the iBook is not running Tiger. On a related subject, why haven't you updated to 10.4.8?

Thanks for your clarification. It will certainly help the tech who comes to your rescue.

Hi!

Your thoughts on the fact that my iBook is not running Tiger makes sense but, on the other end, I thought that VNC was platform-independant and more or less OS independant... but, again, I don't really know what I'm talking about!

The only reason I haven't updated to 10.4.8 is very simple and practical. I live outside urban areas and the only access I have to internet is through a 28000 bps modem! Imagine downloading a 211 MB file!

Thanks again for your interest!

I would recommend switching the iBook to OSXVnc. I haven't had any problems with that. Also, make sure that you turn off Apple Remote Desktop in Sharing preferences.

I want to thank you for your help. The moment I ran OSXVNC as server on my iBook, instead of Chicken of the VNC, it worked!

Thanks again for your trouble and creativity.
