Dear MacosX.com

Presently, I own a LinkSys WRT54G 2.4GHz Wireless-G router that has four ethernet outs which are all now, connected to four DELL PC desktops running Windows XP and using Internet Explorer 7.0. No computers are connected to this router via its wireless capability.

I wish to connect my Mac G4 running OS X Tiger 10.4 to this LinkSys Router via its wireless capability.

Therefore, I was hoping to acquire a LinkSys USB Wireless adapter which hopefully, could facilitate this connection.

Does LinkSys offer a USB device that can be used on a Mac runnng OS X Tiger 10.4?

Will it work within my existing network environment?

Is there anything special I need to do to get the LinkSys USB wireless adapter to work with my Mac? Any special drivers?

Remarkably, my Mac G4 will work whenever I plug it into one of the four ethernet ports. Interestingly, it uses a completely different surf application, Safari.

Appreciate your guidance,
Doug

Doug,

The AirPort Extreme is the way to go because it has almost guaranteed compatibility with current and future releases of OS X, and is utterly unobtrusive. You have to pay the price, of course.

I did find a usb adaptor from Afterthe mac after doing some research.

The Linsys systems state they support Windows and do not mention whether they support Mac or not. I hesitate to recommend their products as it maybe more of a problem to get it to work.

I hope this helps you.

Cheryl:

Does the AirPort Extreme come as aPCI card?

My desktop motherboard uses only PCI. I believe the AirPort Extreme may be a different module altogether that seats directly into a specially designated place on the motherboard (near where the Blue Tooth module sits), right?

I don't think my Mac G4's motherboard has this special seating area. Therefore, I would need a special adapter for the AirPort Extreme to be used as a PCI card, right?

I certainly appreciate your insight and your very prompt response.

You rock!
Doug
P.S. Merry Christmas to you & your family.

Doug,

You have a slot/designated place in your G4 (MDD) for an airport card. It actually takes the original card not the Extreme. I did find a place where you can get it.

Original Apple AirPort Card for $110

Here is instructions on how to install it. While it says it is for the Quicksilver, your MDD is very similar.
