I have configured the server with services for Macintosh. I have shared a folder. I can see the server in the finder (workgroup.) When I try to connect to the server I get a message saying the original item cannot be found. If I click on go and put in the server name (smb://server name or IP address) I get a message saying the user name or password are incorrect. What user name is the mac trying to use? Thanks.

Hi there Harold.
The windows server is asking for a username and password of a user who is authorised to connect to that share (under the sharing tab of the properties of the share)
Cheers

Understood. However, where am I to put this information? When one clicks on go and then connect to server, no authentication credentials are requested. Thanks

Hi there Harold.
You select go then connect to server (or apple + k) then put in the windows server in the form of "smb://servername" (in my case I would put smb://server.home.local
When I select connect it prompts me for my username and password.
Is this not the case for you?
Cheers
Patrick.

No, Sir. I am never prompted for the password. I only get the error message that the user name and or password are incorrect. Thanks for your patience.

Hi there Harold.
I suspect that the Windows 2003 server is trying to digitally sign communications which basically means the server is saying "If you aren't windows, I don't want to know you so naaaah!"
To fix this "feature" in windows and set it to only do it when able do the following on the Windows Server:
From Administrative Tools, open Domain Controller Security Settings.
Go to Local Policies then Security Options.
Scroll down to find the entry Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always). Set this to Disabled.
The only thing left to do is to reload the security policy, as changes don’t otherwise take effect for some time. Open up a command window and type:
gpupdate
You may need to reboot the server in some cases.
I hope this helps.
Cheers

Patrick,
Thank you so much for sticking with me today. You have really been an answer to prayer. I had already performed the function that you requested. I was only missing one piece to the puzzle and that was as follow...
I have been a PC user for so long, that when it comes to sharing files and folder, a right click dis the trick. So, I tried to do the same on the server and failed to realize that in order for the Macs to see the new shares, I had to go through the wizard (right click on shares in the computer management mmc and select new share.) After going through the process, everything worked out fine. I do, however have one question; Even though I am now connected to the new share, why is it that if I click connect on the server in the finder I still get the message The alias "server name" could not be opened, because the original item could not be found?
Thanks so much,
H
