I have recently purchased a Sony Handicam DC HC 69 E. Prior to this I was using an older Sony Handicam and had no problems down connecting the video camera and transferring the footage to my iMac 5 using a Firewire cable. However, with the new video camera, I have a problem in connecting it to my Mac despite using the Firewire/iLink connecting cable as i Movie does not detect teh connection.
The new camera came with bundled software and its contents indicate that its contains software for both Windows(Picture Package including Image Mixer VCD 2) and Mac OS X (Image Mixer VCD 2)operating systems. However, my attempt to install the IMXINST.SIT software by on my Mac following the instructions contained in the User guide for the Handycam was not successful even though I copied the file to the Applications folder as double-clicking the file did not unzip it ( as indicated by the user Guide). Instead, I was asked to specify what application was associated with the program in order that it could be opened.
My attempt to seek technical support from Pixela, the creators of the software has left me even more confused since they insist that the software is only for burning disks.

I would be grateful if someone can guide me as to how to get the new Handicam connected to my Mac so that the connection is recognized by iMovie4. Specifically, I would like to know how I can install the copied IMXINST.SIT file on to my Mac, since Sony recommends that this be done for connecting the camera to the Mac.

You need to download a copy of Stuffit Expander. This will allow you to unarchive (open the .sit file).

If this fails to solve your problems, I would search the Apple site as the drivers for your HandyCam should be included int he system already, or downloadable from Apple.

Regards,
Joe

Attempts to connect my Sony DCR-HC 96 to my iMac G5/ Macbook Pro (loaded with with OS X 10.4.5 and iMovie 6.0.2) using the base station provided & firewire IE1394 (4 pin connector) have failed. Earlier I was using an older Sony Handycam and had no problems connecting the video camera and transferring the footage to my iMac 5 using the same cable. The message I now get (with both the MacBook and the iMac G 5) is that there is no camera connected. I have followed all the steps listed in the Handycam Operating Guide -setting "Display Output" to "LCD Panel", keeping the handycam on play/edit mode, putting "A/V" to "DV Out-On". I have also checked all connections, disconnecting and reconnecting them, using other firewire cables, switching the camera off and on, rebooting etc. - all the things suggested but to no avail. However, after physically connecting, the LCD panel does not show "DV OUT iLINK" message that should appear (as has been mentioned in the Op.Guide) but "DV IN" message is seen. If I play the handycam on the VCR/Edit mode using its own controls, this changes to DV OUT. But since the computer(s) fail to recognize the video-camera, I cannot operate its controls using the iMovie software. I have also checked the dock - it works fine with Windows XP using the USB.

I have also re-set the Handycam clock & synchronized the two, as closely as is possible, since Apple help says that this problem could arise if the date and time on both don't match. Although, it isn’t possible to get them to synchronize exactly with regard to time, I have, while resetting the Handycam, set the time again as closely as is physically possible. I have also set the general setting in iMovie and put the frame rate at 25 fps since the recording has been done in the PAL format. Even then the computer/notebook do not recognize that the camera is connected.

I have tried to see if there is a driver that should be installed. The Pixela software provided by Sony is only a disc burning software and Sony Op. guide implies that the driver should be there in the Mac OS/iMovie software. The Apple support site does not specifically list this model as a compatible one and gives the link to Sony for additional info on compatible models. However, the Sony site has no further info on this , although the operating guide indicates that the video camera is Mac compatible.

Is there something that I've missed? If it is, it’s most likely something that has not been mentioned in the Op.Guide.Is there a software solution/driver that will enable me to link the two? Can someone guide me and help me resolve this problem, as I am at my wits end?

The problem is still not resolved. Moreover, though the last notification for Tech Support has been indicated as 10:40 am on 4th Sept. and the ticket info shows 2 Tech Views, I am unable to find anything new after Ziutek's response on 29th May 06. Ziutek's response was in regard to installing Pixela software, which I had at that time mistakenly thought as containing a driver to enable connecting the camera and the Mac. Once I came to know the true nature of the Pixela software, I had, in fact, reopened the issue with further information about the steps that I had taken to try and get the two to connect. This querry is still to be responded to.

I read over all that you have done, and you may have missed one more thing.

When connecting the camera to the Mac, connect the camera's power adaptor to the camera and a good power outlet. Now select DV Out and see if the Mac sees the camera.

Sorry! Been there and done it all using power adaptor and DV out setting. It still does not recognize camera /connection.

Does the camera have a VTR mode? Try that and see if iMovie sees the camera.

Make sure you turn off the camera first before you connect it to the Mac. Once connected (power and cable) then turn on the camera.

If this does not work, you will need to call Sony or email them

The problem I have been hitting is that I can not find support for the HC69 camera.
