Tim,

Yes you can.

1. you will need to know his public IP address

2. on the destination firewall router (his), you will need to permit INBOUND FTP and also specify his iMac as the DMZ host i.e. the machine that ftp requests are directed to.

3. you need to activate the FTP service on his iMac:
• open SYSTEM PREFERENCES
•*select SHARING
• select SERVICES
• scroll down the list and select to FTP ACCESS
• put a tick in the check-box or press START
• select the FIREWALL tab
• make sure FTP ACCESS is ticked.

4. you will need a login account on his machie. If you do not already have one:
• open SYSTEM PREFERENCES
• select ACCOUNTS
• press the + bottom left
• enter your full name, a short name (you can change the default from first initial + last name) and password and press CREATE ACCOUNT

5. unless you're happy with accessing his public folders, you'll need to set permissions on the folders your account shouod have access to.

6. try and connect to his machine by using an FTP program like Interarchy or RBrowser (comes with Tiger) specifying his public address and your login and password.

THe most likely cause of any problems will be the destination firewall, i.e. that it is blocking your request for access. If you get stuck there, let me know & I'll see if I can help you through that.
