Hi there! Firstly, thanks in advance for your time, whoever you are.
I would call myself and lower/intermediate type of user. I work a lot with my mac desktop (733mhz powerPC G4 OSX 10.3.9)
My most urgent problem is that i just bought a wireless USB adaptor (Belkin). It says on the packet that its for windows but i managed to download a mac driver from their website, so technically it should work. Thats what belkin tech support told me anyway. i installed the software, but the computer doesnt read the device, it sais 'no device available'.
I dont have broadband acount myself but i know i am in a 'hot spot', or whatever it's called because other pc's pick up internet here. Now what i need to know is how would do i get connected to a wireless network, with such a usb device, if at all possible? i really dont know anything about what settings i should have to try and get connected. if you could help me with that would be great.
Another major prob is that the computer keeps crashing. Do you know why this is and what to do about it? (i use programs such as final cut pro and soundtrack to edit video and sound). i have two hardrives with about 3.5 gb of free space left. Do i need to clean out the computer and re-install the operating system?
Thank you again for you time, best regards, julia

Rarely do the Belkin USB adapters work on OS 10.x, so I wouldn't spend more time trying.

One of the reasons you may have programs crashing is that you have very little disk space left.Programs like FCP need a LOT of scratch space, and in general, you want to have about 20% of your hard drive free (even if you're not using FCP or Soundtrack). Either consider installing larger hard drives (inexpensive and easy to do) or back up some of your large files to an external drive.

There may be other reasons your Macintosh is crashing, but this would be a start.

HTH and please let us know what happens.

Actually, I haven't come across any wireless USB adapters that work with Mac OS 10.x; all that will change this year with the new "Macintel" computers (Macbook Pro and the new iMac, and the others to follow this year). You may want to try looking at xlr8yourmac.com and see if you can find any one who has had success with what's out there right now.

Hello Ishan,
Thank you for your advice last time about keeping 20 percent free space on the disks, that worked well and my applications are now running nicely. I have signed on to a tiscali broadband account but am running into problems setting up and connecting. After installing and restarting, i try to configure in 'system preferences' (following all the instructions from the installation guide). I set the password and username and the number provided by them in the 'phone number' box which is just 0,38. Then i click 'apply now' but it doesnt authenticate and then it 'disconnects'. I dont know about the other options, such as proxies and DNS server and TCP/IP. Now those boxes are left blank because i have no idea what they are.
By the way when first i enter into system preferences it sais 'Speed touch USB configured but not connected'. So i guess that means the computer registers the modem at least?
I called Tiscali broadband support but they say they dont have many technicians working with Mac and there seems no way to get a hold of one of them.
If you have any ideas what could be the problem i would be very greatful to hear them. have a nice weekend.
julia
