AOL for MAC OS X
will initialize but will fail to connect.
Gets to Step 2 but fals when it tries to move to step 3.
Or, it will get through all the steps and then still give the second error window after some wait time.
G5 / Mac OS x 3.9.
Netgear Router
Comcast Cable Modem
FIRST ERROR WINDOW...
Failed to establish a full connection to AOL. Web access and address book updaes may not work as expectd. To try again, sign off, the sign back on to AOL. If the problem continues, you may need to restart your computer or reinstall AOL software.
SECOND ERROR WINDOW...
Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again.
FINAL ERROR WINDOW...
We failed to sign on to the AOL service to complete software setup.
Should we try to connect again?
QUESTION: Is there a workaround or am I totally out of luck?

Can you connect to AOL when directly connected to the cable modem?
Also, here's a link to some good info at Netgear support.

I have found that some of the cheaper routers may not function well with an AOL account, but Netgear seems to disagree on that.
Let me know how it goes...

thank you for your response. please note that the netgear router IS the comcast modem. this is the official comcast gateway, so i'm not sure i have a choice about changing that piece of hardware. netgear has offered an idea about changing my port setting, but their instructions are not consistent with the settings labels that i can access. the settings menu may have been customized for comcast.
i have had to use AOL 5 thrugh classic for two years now. i am constantly looking for a solution. i have had AOL support tell me directly, for the first time a few hours ago, that their OS X version will NOT work with the comcast modem/router i have. can you say...heavy sigh? i knew that you could.

Yes, I can agree. The problem is really with AOL, and there may not be any fix, except changing to a more capable router. I am not familiar with any Netgear cable modem/router.
Just so I understand - your TV cable attaches DIRECTLY into the Netgear router- and not into another box first, and then the router plugs into that box with an Ethernet patch cable??.
A better question would be: What did you get from Comcast when you signed up for Internet service In that case, the first box will be your cable modem, and the Netgear is a router/gateway. If there is ONLY the Netgear - what is the Netgear model number (from the ID label on that router)? Well, give me the model number from the Netgear in any case. I'd like to do a little checking on my own.
If there is no real solution through AOL, then I could recommend that you choose to say 'Farewell, AOL - good riddance!'. You have your internet already through Comcast.

yes, it's prolly time to let AOL go; i've had it for SO many years...i just have to see if my COMCAST email will work with my MAC MAIL.
to answer your questions...
My Broadband cable hooks directly into the Comcast/Netgear Cable Modem/Wireless Router. I have 4 computers (2 MACs, 2 PCs) hooked into the router. They are all hardwired. (Didn't like the signal/response I was getting on pure wireless).
The Netgear router/modem combo (one box) is branded with the Comcast logo. FYI.
It is the box that came with my Comcast high speed internet service. I am home networked. Model number is CG814WG.
Into that flow, I have recently added a Vonage VoIP serivce router. It hooks into one of the PCs ethernet ports and pulls broadband signal from the Netgear router also. (that's another horror story. vonage told me that tivo would work with their system just fine. tivo finally admitted that it would not work with a VoIP system and had me order a wireless adapter for each of my two tivo units...will it never end?)
thanks again for all your assistance...welll, really...it's just good to have a technical ear to bend. i'm a graphic designer and anything more technical than photoshop hurts my head (hehehe)

THIS ISSUE IS COMPLETE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS. I UNDERSTAND NOW THAT AOL WILL NOT WORK WITH MY NETGEAR/COMCAST MODEM-ROUTER AT THIS TIME.
