TICKET ARCHIVE -> Control-click causes desktop hiccup

Hi there -

I'm troubleshooting an issue which is very similar to one I'd seen posted on the forums, but remained unanswered -

When I try to control-click on a desktop icon, or any file, there is a very brief flahs while all of the desktop icons disappear and are then redrawn. If the control-click was on a file in an open window, the window ends up closed when this occurs.

This has always worked properly and just suddenly began to occur.

I'm very tech-savvy but have not had lots of recent Mac experience.

Please let me know if any additional details beyond the below would be helpful - and thanks in advance for your help!

Details of my setup are as follows -

OS X Version 10.4.3

Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.6 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5f2
Serial Number: YM338RZTNVQ

Mike, welcome to macosx.com

I will suspect it was a problem with a contextual menu item installed in /Library/Contextual Menu Items or in ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items.

Do you had a quick look at the user's crashreporter logs in Console ?

The most well-known culprit (as far as I know):

(1) Stuffit stuff: "StuffitCM", a contextual menu installed with Allume Stuffit Deluxe. Drag it out of the /Library/Contextual Menu Items/ folder and relogin back

(2) Unsanity's Applicataion Enhancer (APE) along with LabelsX: uninstall both of them (a conflict between the two products).

Regards
Philippe

Philippe - you are awesome! As soon as I read the suggestion with regard to the Stuffit issue, I knew that would turn out to be the cause of the problem - after all, Stuffit embeds itself into the context menu. Nice troubleshooting! You're 1 for 1 with me - a perfect track record - thanks so much and have a great New Year!
