Hi,

I have a mixed set of PCs (apple and XP) and can control the Mac's very easilty using ARD 2.2.

Is there a way to control PCs from the ARD installed on my mac? Is there some version of client ARD or VNC for Windows that I need to install?

Thanks,
Raymond

Hi Raymond

You would need to install VNC on the PC, then ARD 2.2 would be able to control it.

I use Ultra@VNC on a PC for this;

thanks for your reply.

I'm a little new to remote controlling machines, so please excuse a dumb questions here - I installed VNC (per your link) on the XP machine, but I'm not sure what to do next. It wasn't clear how I "turn it on".

Raymond

Just open (double click) the Ultra@VNC viewer on the PC. There should be an alias on the Desktop after you install it.

At the top of the window, you'll see VNC Server with an IP address. That should be the IP address of the machine you have running ARD.

In ARD, use the Add by Address under the File Menu. Add the IP of the PC, name and password, then you should be able to connect.

Thanks for the direction, still stuck though.

I opened the VNC viewed on the PC, but the ARD (on my Mac) is not showing up as a VNC server. If I manually enter the IP address is shows a "connecting" message but nothing happens.

Trying to connect from ARD to the pc directly didn't work either.

Any thoughts on what to try next?

Raymond

You should have a Ultra@VNC Viewer on the desktop of the PC. Open it and make sure the IP of the Controlling Machine (The ARD machine) is in the (host:display or hostort) field.

Then Open ARD on the Mac and add by address, using the IP of the PC you want to control. You need to also put in a user name and password.

On my PC, I have a second Admin account setup and use that to connect from ARD.

Bob,

When I open the viewer, the IP address of my ARD machine appears (I entered in manually a couple of days ago and now it appears by default). When I click connect, it prompts me for a VNC login (only password field appears, no login name).

I tried to connect again and now I get a dialog box saying "management application is open" and I can't really do anything.

thanks for all of your help so far.

You don't need to click Connect on the VNC on the PC, just leave it runnign the way it is, and connect from the Mac to the PC with the PC's IP number, user name and password.

Have you setup another account on the PC with admin privileges?

On the Mac with ARD, have you added the PC IP number and user name and password?

Do you have a Firewall running on the PC?

Hi - here's the latest:

- I'm using an admin account on the PC; or at least it's the one I'm trying to use remotely. I did not setup a separate account

- On the Mac with ARD, I added the PC IP number and username and PW

- The firewall on the PC is turned off

Tell me what the IP number is for the PC, the internal IP it gets from the Router. Also, the IP number for the Mac you're trying to use to control the PC.

Tell me the IP number the VNC server shows on the PC in the VNC Server Field.

Bob,

The IP number for the PC is 192.168.1.100 (ran ipconfig)

I launch VNC Viewer on the PC, and in the VNC Server field there is the following IP address: 192.168.1.76

I can't determine how this is populated, it may have come from when I entered it in manually.

This is the IP address of the Mac running ARD

Bob - I noticed on the PC that it can't even ping itself

Some routers have a setting to disallow pings, check for that.

I can now connect to your Mac and see both screens

I've been playing around with my PC with VNC.

I uninstalled it and downloaded the newer version that you have. I opened the alias on the Desktop 'VNCviewer' and set it up and could no longer connect from my Mac.

Uninsatlled again and reinstalled and opened the VNCserver alias on the Desktop. In that window you'll see 'Require MS Logon'

Uncheck that and click apply and see if you can connect from the Mac.

This wasn't checked. But something looks different. With the Server running on the PC, the PC's icon in ARD now shows VNC inside (wasn't there before). And when I try to connect, I get a new message 'Authentication Failed'.

might we be getting closer?

Authentication should be related to name and paswword.
