Hi David,
While I don't know exactly why your control strip disappeared, I can describe a few things that cause this.
First of all, most programs that want to take over your entire screen will cause the control strip to go into hiding. Games are notorious for this. They don't want the control strip to block your view while you are trying to save the world!!
What these programs do is send a command to the control strip control panel telling it to "hide". It is still installed, but you cannot see it. To make it re-appear, open the control strip control panel and click on the "show control strip" radio button. It should appear. If the show button is already active, I have found that clicking the strip off then on again makes it reappear.
The other thing that could be happening is that the control strip control panel is somehow being moved to the control panels (disabled) folder. If this happens then the control panel isn't loaded and cannot be used. Make sure the control strip control panel is in your control panel folder (not the disabled one).
To move the strip do the following. Move you mouse icon over the strip, press the option key and click on the strip. While holding the mouse button down you can move the strip up and down the screen. If you move the mouse to the other edge of the screen, the strip will then move up and down that side. It won't go anywhere in the middle.
Finally, the control panel lets you choose a "hot Key" to turn the control strip on and off. Set one of these up, then you can turn it on and off as needed.
Hope this helps.
