i go on All Music.com frequently to research different groups. i would like to listen to the short sound bites they offer. ive downloaded Real Player so i can do this with Amazon's samples, but it doesnt work with All Music's.
i would also like to transfer some files that are on an external hard drive over to my mac. they were downloaded from a dell computer, so i assume these too are in windows media player format, which my mac doesnt recognize. i did some checking on this one, and found NCH Swiftsound, which has a free download. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. HI when Microsoft decided to no longer support the Mac with the Widows Media Player for free, they provided a quicktime plug in called Flip4Mac, this will allow you to see and use anything in windows Media Format and depending on how much you pay as they have several different option, a lot more than just that.
There are other ways to get at Windows stuff but for the price this is a really good and simple approach, I guess it's just another way of adding to the enormous wealth of the founder of the original company, let's face it free just does not cut it.
Flip4mac is really very good and I actually did go for a more expensive than basic solution as I use some pretty high end Video software.
I think you will find it solves your problems and is not all that expensive, unless you really have to have high end functions.

thank you very much stuart, do you know anything about the NCH Swiftsound free download? my main use would be just to listen to the allmusic.com sound samples, and probably not very often. i could download a trial of the flip4mac and convert the stuff on my external hard drive over to something my mac can read, but after that, i really wouldnt need a very advanced plug just to listen to bits and pieces of songs. so i really dont need to pay $30 for that ability, but if thats all thats competent out there, i guess i dont have any choice. jim

HI I have not used Swiftsound personally, but from what I have seen of it, it is pretty limited.
If you are going to go to just allmusic and want to simply convert sound samples, then the Flip4Mac might be a bit expensive.
I use the Flip4Mac studio, because when all is said and done, I usually end up doing a lot more by the time have finished, that I figured that a complete package would be better than getting a collection of bits and pieces that usualy end up having glitches in them that end up making my work more difficult in the end. As long as you are really sure that all you are going to do is with that one site, then a small app might fill your needs completely.
I use a lot of stuff that comes in the WMF format amongst others and the only thing I could find that really filled all the gaps was Flip4Mac.
I have t oadmit, I did feel more than a little ripped off, because Windows Media Converter was free, and it is not like Microsoft is exactly broke.
But as I needed it, I had to spring for it, because there are so many people with so many music sites, I felt I had to cover all bases.
Don't forget the Swiftsound download at least the free one, is limited until you buy the full package.
Now the full package is a really useful system because of what it covers.
The thing about Flip4Mac, is it is installed into your system, and you have it built in. You don't have t oopen any Apps to get at the files you have downloaded because they are played immediately online.
If you go with Swiftsound, make sure to check out exactly what file types it covers, because in my experience, a lot of these free downloads are designed to get you to buy the full package in the end.
Hope that's of some value.
