I can't seem to drag a file from a mounted dvd directly onto my desktop now that I've installed Tiger. What's up with that? Am I doing something wrong? It gives me a circle with a line through it symbol and won't copy... ??

Tracy,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
Rather than copying the file to the desktop, open a folder window from your hard drive, and drag the file there. You then will have the copy on your drive and will be able to open it from there.
If you want to just read the file, just click twice on it from the DVD to open it.
There are some limitations to the newer OS's that will not allow you to copy from a disk to your desktop. You need to copy it to the hard drive in order to save the file.

This is still not working.
If I go to my Macintosh HD and create a new folder, I still can't drag anything into it from my mounted DVD.
I went ahead and verified and repaired permissions on my HD and I've verified the disk.
I back up my files on DVD and when I need them again, I need to be able to copy the whole folder back onto my hard drive. The only way I've found to copy the files is to open each file in its native app -- PhotoShop/illustrator/Quark and then save them to my drive!!
That's getting old REALLY quick.
Help!

Tracy,
How did you create that DVD? Did you just drag folders to be copied or did you use a program to do the backup?
It could be that those folders are locked. Click on one folder on the DVD, then go to the File Menu and select Get Info.
Right above the More info section is the word Locked with a box next to it. If the box is check marked, click on it to uncheck it.
Now you should be able to drag and drop the folder to your hard drive.

I burned the DVD with Toast Titanium. When I 'get info' on the folders all the options are grayed out with the exception of owner -- I can unlock that and change the name of the owner, but when I do it just gives me the message "operation could not be completed" unexpected error. Error code 195
I'm not seeing anything in the 'get info' to indicate that the folder is locked -- the 'locked' square is unchecked (and grayed out as well -- so I can't lock or unlock it)
Surely this isn't the way Tiger works? You can't drag to copy files from a cd or dvd?

Tracy,
The problem is not Tiger, but the DVD. Under Ownership and permissions, does it show that you can read? You can not write to the DVD once it has finished the burn, so it will not show that you can write.
Click once on the DVD icon. Now go to the File Menu and select Get Info.
At the very bottom of that window is Ignore permissions. If that box is checked, uncheck it.
Now give it a try and let me know how you do.

I've unchecked the box : Ignore ownership on this volume, but that still didn't allow me to copy.
I tried a different DVD that was from a client, and that one won't copy either. I also tried a CD that I had burned -- same results. AND lastly I tried to copy a photo from a Banana Stock cd that I purchased last year... no luck.

Tracy,
Sorry for the delay. I was having internet issues.
Thank you for doing that trouble shooting with other disks. Since it is not a disk problem, we have to find out if it is just your user folder or if it is system wide.
I want to avoid re-installing the OS. If it comes to that I will give you step by step instructions in order to save your documents, etc.
Go to System Preferences>Accounts and create a new account.
You may need to click on the padlock at the bottom left, and type in your password at the prompt in order to add a new user.
Make sure you allow it to be administrator to the computer.
Double check the Login Options so it shows list of users and not to automatically log in.
Now log out, then log in with the new user you just created.
Try that DVD to see if you can move a file.
If you can, then we know it is a preference file in your home folder.
Let me know how you do.

Great -- I was able to log out and log back in as Test and I was able to copy items from the DVD directly to the desktop or a folder...
Yay... sort of...
now what do I do...

Tracy,
This is good news. The next step is to delete/trash a few preference files.
Log in to your original user account.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Now go to the View Menu and select by list. This will put things in alpha order making it easier to find specific files.
Locate and trash the following:
com.apple.ASDocApplication.plist
com.apple.BezelServices.plist
com.apple.bomarchivehelper.plist
com.apple.digihub.plist
com.apple.DirectoryService.Config.plist
com.apple.DiskCopy.plist
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.FolderActions.plist
com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.diskimagesuiagent.plist
com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.plist
com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.uiagent.plist
com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
com.apple.nsl.ui
com.apple.recentitems.plist
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Restart the computer- logging in to your original user, then empty the trash.
You may need to double check the system preferences to make sure you have your settings correct - like Energy Saver.
Now give one of those CDs/DVDs a try.
