So I'm backing up hundreds of files, and it tells me it can't copy xxxx file because it can't be read. Then it stops. Argh...I have to go through and check each and every file to see if it copied or not. Can I not have it continue through copying as much as possible then at the end tell me what it couldn't copy? Also when I'm copying multiple files it doesn't say the name of the folder its copying. This is unbelievably stupid. Is there an intelligent way of doing this? Imagine you're copying 20 files and they have no names? You don't know which one is making the fastest progress because the program can't be bothered giving the name? Like moving Documents from A to B. How hard can that be? Or should I just not bother with Apple programs when it comes to moving things around? Are there other software packages that do this with some logic?

The Finder is not a very bright app, and AFAIK, there is no way to tell the Finder to keep copying, ignore files that can't be read and then tell you which files were unable to be read. I would worry, though why the Finder can't read certain files.

There may be shareware utilities (e.g., SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner) that will let you make backups, copying massive numbers of files but they also will stop if they encounter a bad file. Carbon Copy Cloner will give you the option to continue copying and will identify the bad file. I don't use SuperDuper regularly, so I can't help with that program. Both are downloadable from versiontracker.com and macupdate.com.

My real concern still remains why some of your files are unreadable. That's not a good sign...HTH.

That is very comforting. That someone else deems this Finder program hardly worth the lines of code its written on. I'll investigate. What about another program for just navigating around? Like a Finder replacement? Like a Finder with some brains? The reasons its not reading can be many. I coudln't care less as it never happens with important files. Just downloaded garbage which were probably corrupt to start wtih.

Quicksilver and Butler are two good shareware Finder replacements. Give them a try. Good support for both programs, although I don't know if they are OK with 10.4.3 (released today).
