we are running InDesign CS on 5 macs, all on OSX connected by a network. we are running into a problem where the indesgn files we are working on will either crash all of a sudden or you try to open a file and it crashes indesign while trying to open. either way, you can't recover the file and it crashes indesign every time you try to open it again. sometimes we will get the recovery window asking if we want to try to recover now, later or cancel. curious if anyone else runs into this, what we can try, etc.

Howdy!
You can recover the damaged file most of the time as it saves an extra back up file (the one with all the crazy characters).
I strongly recommend you save BUJICs of all your files (Back Up Just In Case) to counter this issue.
So, what kind of server do you have? PC or Mac? Your computers, are they in Tiger or earlier?
Have you rebuilt permissions on your computers lately? I'd also move then delete InDesign's preference file on each machine. Don't delete the pref file till you know the docs are working.
Sometimes basic maintenance keeps InDesign from crashing.

the extra backup file doesn't help. indesign crashes and when you try to open again, it crashes indesign again.
we backup nightly for the server and individual clients on the server. it just sucks when you have done prepress on a large project all day and at the end of the day the file crashes. we've been saving copies to our desktops on big projects to help alleviate some of this.
eveything is running on macs. i believe everyone is on panther, including the server. where do we rebuild permissions on our computers or is that something done from the server? i'll try deleting the preferences to see if that helps.
have you heard of this before or is it sort of a maintenance thing?
thanks for your help, nathaniel!

Delete preferences from the individual work stations.
Tell me more about your InDesign files. What sort of graphics do you have placed within them?
Your server is a mac server which is good. Do you have problems with ALL InDesign files or just particular ones?
