TICKET ARCHIVE -> crash during disk permission repair

My TiBook crashes during "repair file permissions."

Consequently, I cannot install Tiger because it crashes during install.

The crash results in a black screen with the error message, in four langauges:

You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button.

Yikes. This reminds me of the chimes of death I experienced on my last laptop. In every other respect, the G4 runs fine, except that it's a little slow which is why I wanted to install the new OS.

Should I use "Repair Disk?" Or some other utility?

Violina, welcome to macosx.com

Do you recently installed iTunes 6.02 on a 10.3.9 system ?
If yes
----
People have been experiencing this problem after installing iTunes 6.0.2 update on 10.3.9, if you did just install iTunes try this:

The iTunes 6.0.2 update of 1/12/06 screwed up at least two files:

folder: your disk -> Library -> Receipts
files: iTunes.pkg, iTunes4.pkg

Other files from their-party plug-ins to iTunes may also be a problem.

Solution:

1) Archive these files so that Disk Utility can not see them anymore**. My solution was to put them into a StuffIt archive.
2) Delete these files
3) Run Disk Utility, Repair Permissions
4) Run Disk Utility, Repair Permissions again"

If you did not just install itunes then try poping in your install disk and using Disk Utility from there.

Thanks Phillipe. I DID just install the new version of iTunes.

I will try hiding or deleting the files you recommended.

However, in response to your last suggestion, I did try rebooting from the 10.3 startup disk and running repair disk permissions from there. I experienced the same crash as when I booted from the startup disk.

Hopefully getting rid of those files will work.

Thanks,

Dina
