Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Problem: Hardware
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Performa 6300
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I'm replacing my maxed-out OEM IDE 1.2G hard drive with a new IDE 6G drive. I don't have any removable storage device, and don't really want to purchase one. My plan is to transfer the entire 1.2G to another computer (PM 6500) on which there's an empty 3G of space, install the new drive (I've already formatted it to HFS+), and transfer the contents back to the new drive.

My questions concern the method of transferring this (these?) data.
1) Is it possible or practical to install ethernet capability on my 6300? This would make the transfer much faster, but if it's expensive, forget it!
2) If I use AppleTalk, how do I connect and configure the two computers? I have connectors (which I use for my printer) and wonder if it's as simple as just connecting the two serial ports? What about chooser settings, etc.? What is the transfer rate for AppleTalk? Should I bring lunch?
3) Can SCSI be used for data transfer?

Thanks for your help!

Kenneth,

Hello and welcome to No Wonder!, your online source for computer help and support.

About your questions...

1) Yes it is possible, but figure on spending upwards of $60 dollars (MacWarehouse pricing- Macsense 10BT/10B2 LC Card) on a LC compatible 10BaseT Ethernet card for your Performa 6300. Ultimately, this is the fastest solution and also a handy one should you want to keep the 6300 and 6500 around- you can network them and easily share files, peripherals and if it's important to you- play network games with a friend/family member.

2) If you use LocalTalk (your printer/modem cable), configuration is also very easy. Just turn on AppleTalk (control panel), set it to the appropriate port on both computers, make sure File Sharing is enabled and log into the computer that you wish to transfer the files to via the Chooser. Unfortunately, this easy and cheap method of networking is quite slow (only 230kbps max)... more like a fast ISDN connection. For 1.2GB, figure on an several hours or more.

3) To my knowledge, SCSI to SCSI was only possible on PowerBook to desktop connections. Desktop systems cannot utilize the SCSI Disk Mode and thus, cannot function as a file transfer/networking interface.
