My daughter's flat panel iMac G4 is home from college.
It won't boot: white screen, then flashing question mark.
i'd like to boot from CD to do disk maintenance, etc.
How do I get the CD/DVD drive door to open? pushing the keyboard eject/open button does not help.
BTW can boot into Open Firmware but not into Target mode.
Thanks
Andrew
Hello! Hope I can help.
To eject the disk with firmware go here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106752
(you have to enter eject cd in the firmware prompt then mac-boot after the disk ejects)
If this doesn't work you could Zap the PRAM which basically resets your computer to its factory settings. Remember all customization options like desktop and sound prefs will be reset as well as the clock when you do this. Zap the PRAM and maybe that would shake the system loose again:

Let me know if the first way works before you do the second.
Talk soon!

Speedy reply! Thanks.
I read on the web that it doesn't work if there is no CD in the drive: I believe it's empty.
Tried "Eject CD". Open Firmware froze!
Suggestions?
Thanks
Andrew
Sounds like you need to first Zap PRAM, then reboot and try opening the disk drive. Let me know how that goes.
No problem on the quick reply. It just worked out well!

Tried that, both by booting with option-command PR and by erasing NVRAM from Open Firmware.
Still won't boot: flashing question mark in folder/ mac OS in a folder.
What puzzles me is why I can't boot into Target Mode (start up holding down T key). I was going to back up data files first.
I read that you can password protect Open Firmware to prevent such obvious intrusions but I bet she didn't do that.
I presume the Hard Disk is sick, hence need to boot from CD, hence need to open CD door.
Again, many thanks
Andrew
