Problem: Hardware
Computer Type: Syquest
Model: EZ flyer 230
RAM: 32meg
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: System 7.6.1
Description:
I use a Syquest ez 230 on a Power Mac 6500. The other day I noticed the Silverlining Lite extension did not load at start-up. I put a cartridge in anyway & of course it got stuck until I manually ejected it with a paper clip. The computer does not see this drive at all, nor does it show up when I run SCSI Probe. I trashed then reloaded the Syquest software to no avail. The unit appears to be functional; the lights come on but it makes a faint, constant ticking sound when sitting there. I tried to loggging onto the Syquest site but there's way too much Java there for my comfort. Any idea what could be the problem here? It's been working fine for 3 months.

I believe the cartidge is damaged. If the device doesn't make tick or click sounds when the cart isn't loaded, then the cart probably has bad blocks. I can't count on my 40 fingers (haha) how many times this has happened to my Syquest EZ 135 and 25 disks. Usually, I cry knowing all the info will be destroyed after formatting it, but sometime Norotns will fix it.
Here's what I do...startup from Disk Tools floppy while the cartidge is installed. It may mount or may not.Check all your disks with Disk First Aid, especially the cart. If DFA fixies it, you're in luck. Maybe Norton Utilities will. If not, hopefully you have some way to backup your data because reforammting may remove the bad, or damaged, blocks. See it Silverlining Lite will open. If it does, and the disk mounts, reinitialize it (this is, of course, a last resort for saving the cart). Good luck.
