Is it possible to set up Pages so its not such a battle to get it to do what I want?
Certain font size and type, certain margins.....that's pretty much it. Oh...and I want the window full screen - no wasted space anywhere as in full maximum width.
I set this up with one document but it didn't remember anything. Can I set up a default layout? Couldn't find anything applicable in Help or Preferences.

pp224-227 in the Pages 2.0.1 User Guide (look under the Help menu) will let you create your own saved print setup. pp243 onwards will show you how to create your own customized template. It's very similar to Microsoft Word or most other robust word processors.
HTH and please let us know what happens. Thanks.

Got the manual opened. On page 224 it says
"5 In Mac OS X version 10.4 choose Manage Custom Sizes from the Paper Size pop-up menu."
?? Nowhere do I see Manage Custom Sizes, Paper size, and I don't see any pop-up menu either. I'm using version 2.0. Could I have the wrong instruction manual?

This is a little bewildering. So I open Pages fonts (Command T) and the keyboard doesn't seem to work. Actually nothing works except the mouse. The highlighted areas are not in blue - they're greyed out. Also you can't tab between the columns like in most every other program. To be able to tab or hop between columns is a great time saver.
When I use Inspector its the same thing. It seems impossible to navigate without that *#$& mouse. Is this correct? Why would they disable keyboard control?
So I open a new document and I can't get it to display to the full width of the screen. It looks like its exactly half. I'm at 1280 x 1024.
I bring up Preferences and I need Command W to close it. But not with Fonts or Inspector. I will never understand why there has to be such inconsistency with Apple.
Anyway, I thought I saw word wrap control somewhere but now I can't find it. I seem to be stuck at half screen width. I drag the window full screen but the working white area is the same size. Seems to make no sense.
Can you PLEASE respond below the questions I ask after copying and pasting them into your reply box? Its more thorough that way. I don't want to give up on Pages yet - but if this is really the way it was designed, I will stick to Word until something better comes along since I'm a little more familiar with it than any other Mac compatible word processor.
I seem to have a basic incompatibility with Apple with the way I prefer layouts of apps. I see it time and time again. I guess I need to seek out other software from other companies first instead of trying Apple's version first since it never seems to be as good. And why would it? They are basically an OS software company. Nobody can be the best at everything.

The word wrap control was in TextEdit. If there is something in Pages let me know. Nothing in Pages Help.

Try upgrading to Pages 2.0.1-that's what I've got running. It may well be that the Help text pagination has changed between 2.0 and 2.0.1.
I agree with you that you're probably better off using Word. You're familiar with it and Word has features you like. Pages does not have all the power Word has, in many ways. Pages is perfectly adequate for a lot of people, but coming from Word, doesn't seem to offer as much-and it's not a Word competitor. I've used Word forever, and I know its tricks and eccentricities. Why bother learning about Pages under those circumstances?
For those who like Pages, that's great as well. Different strokes...
If you drive a Honda (and like it), why buy a Toyota and then complain about the features the Toyota lacks compared to your Honda? In any event, give feedback to Apple if you'd like aspects of Pages improved.
In any event, download (or upgrade to) Pages 2.0.1 and the page references I gave you will be correct.
I'm closing this question.

How to upgrade? Software Update tells me everything is up to date?

Look on Apple's Apple software downloads page. It should be there.
Regardless, the detailed user's manual for 2.0 and 2.0.1 aren't significantly different. I'm sure you can find the pages which show you how to set up templates and set up your own custom page setup preferences.
