How do I defragg my Mac G5 and what do I need to do it? I need help in knowing how to keep my computer free of weirdness and viruses and things that can slow it down. I am a designer and transfer a lot files back and forth and am finding that freaky things are happening on my G5.
Thanks, Kim
Kim, welcome on macosx.com
(1) about defrag
Panther/Tiger defrags files under 20 MB of size automatically "on the fly".
Since 2002, I never defrag my G3.
For big files (movies, iTunes library, iPhoto library, big CS/EPS/Pagemaker.. files), I would suggest to put them on an external drive (which can also be used for backup): well, around 1.5 $ per G

(2) about maintenance tips, here is my advices
(a) Repair permissions each week
(must be admin)
Launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility
On the left pane, select the drive
On the right, select the First Aid (or SOS) tab
Then click on repair permissions and let run; don not worry about messages like " new permissions...."
Quit DiskUtility
Shutdown and reboot
(b) use Macjanitor for running the Unix maintenance scripts
and use it to run the maintenance scripts which are automatically ran on your Mac between 02Am and 04 am..if your Mac is on at this moment.
I can advice you to run Macjanitor daily script each day, the weekly script each week, ..and so on

(c) Use Onyx once a month to clean the caches.

(3) Usefull tools
a. TechToolPro (
www.micromat.com): defrag, test the hardware, repair a lot in the System software,.. A very good tool.
b. DiskWarrior (
www.alsoft.com): does only one thing..repair the mac catalog (the FAT if you prefer), but it succeeds where all the other fail.
One say: "If DW fails to repair your hard drive, this drive is defintively out"
These two softwares are the two ones which must be in your emergency repair kit ;-)

(4) About viruses
There is no known virus on the mac plateform; the only danger are:
* macro-viruses in Word/Excell documents, but you can disable the macros in these two programs.
* viruses as attachements of emails you forward/reply to a Windows-based friend; if you receive an email with an infected attachment, this attachment cannot harm your Mac but be dangerous if you forward this email to PCs
Intego (
www.intego.com) develops good security software for Mac; their antivirus is good.
Norton Antivirus may also help
>>> Caution: I speak about Norton Antivirus; do not install Norton Utilities, SystemTools or related tools: first, they are discontinued by Symantec, secondly they can damage your machine..(they are so awfull craps of code !)

(5) Freaky ? No !
* I own a G3 since 2003 with Panther; applying the maintenance tips above a regular basis, I only face one Kernel Panic (a crash): the reason was that the FW cable of my burner (in action) disconnects from the mac
I never defrag the G3... but I apply DiskWarrior on this machine each year
I receive tons of infected emails; basic rules in Mail.app allow me to trash them and to avoid to send them to my PCs friends: I never undergone any virus action !
* I own a imac G5 20'' since June: same maintenance tips...same happiness
A counter-example ? My dad own a Dell machine for one year. Monday, for the first time in his life, he was connected with a DSL modem to the nweb.
Today, he called me, freaky: "I've messages every 10 minutes asking me to view this or this site..how can I get rid of these f***""
I check his machine: I found 5 spywares, two viruses.
yes, I'm a happy Mac user..and sure you'll be also in a very next short time..
regards
