Hi Ferdinand,

Thanks. I've tried 3 times to submit a question but the text doesn't appear.

Basically I discovered that I was missing several applications programs this morning (eg. graphic converter, ical, dvd player, fugu etc) and when i search for them they are not on my hard drive. Is there some way of checking their history or the history of deleted files please?

Also when I try to "Verify Disk" after repairing permissions the button is not active so I can't do it?

Thanks!

Deanna,

I know this should be grayed out. Basically, what you have to do now, is shut down your PowerBook, put the CD that you got with the PB in the computer, hold down the "c" key and then while holding it down, start up the computer. Let the "c" key go, when the installer appears. From the Menu, choose Disk Utility. Once opened, click on your Harddrive (not Macintosh HD, the one above I mean) and then click Repair Disk. You dont need to click Verify Disk, exept if you want to. Then when everything is done. Shut down and re-start the computer without holding down any button. Once you see the Finder, you can eject the cd.

This doesnt bring back the Applications that were missing, but it prevents it from happening again. Maybe, you want to check if the applications are still in the trash?

Hope this helps,

Ferdinand

Thanks Ferdinand! I'll try that next week. Unfortunately at the moment my disk is in a different state! Yes I've checked the trash and they are not there, mainly because I was pretty quick to clear it. I'll just have to reload them all, some I've downloaded off the net (eg. ical).

Thanks again!

Youre welcome.
Next week I will be very busy, so I might not answer as fast, but I will try to check as often as I can to check.

Hi Ferdinand,

Thanks for your help 3 weeks ago. We spent last week trying to reinstall OSX but I kept having permissions problems. Finally I have erased the hard drive and installed OSX again and everything seems to be working well. I was wondering why Microsoft office didn't install though. Did I forget to do something when I installed OSX and is there a way I can install Office without erasing the hard drive again?

Thank you!

Hi again,

Don't worry about the last question. I remembered I obtained Office when I obtained all the other software I need for my research.

Thanks anyway!

So... did it work?

Unfortunately I am away from uni at the moment so I don't have access to the disks. I'm guessing it will work. Right now I am trying to install my astro software, miriad, pgplot etc. They are a whole lot of fun.

I dont know that software, but they surely are fun. I hope it works when you get back to the uni and have access to the disks.

Hello,

I am on vacation for two weeks, till the 6th of August. I wont be checking macosx.com, or if only once or twice at the most. Please go to another tech or visit the forums in the mean time. If its urgent, you can always e-mail me.
Thanks a lot,

Ferdinand
