I have a LaCie external hard drive and I'm trying to delete the user file for laptop datam that was stored there. Every time I drag it to the trash on my desktop G4, and attempt to empty the trash, it tells me that I don't have sufficient privileges to do so. Do I need to connect the laptop to the hard drive to accomplish this? If I change the security settings on the files, that seems to accomplish nothing also. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Amy, welcome to macosx.com
What you should do is to uncheck the "Ignore Permission on this Drive" checkbox (if checked) found in the "Get Info" of the external drive.
Must be admin
If this box is unchecked, there is another problem
I hope this helps.

Hi, Philippe!
That was a great suggestion and made perfect sense...but unfortunately did not work. Darn! If you have any other ideas, please shoot them my way!
Thanks!
With kind regards,
Amy

Amy, could you try the freeware Batchmod
http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
and try to modify (i.e. give the R-W-X permission to some files on the laCie and try again to push them in the trash ?
Your admin of the G4, right ?
This sentence is confusing me:
> Do I need to connect the laptop to the hard drive to accomplish this?
How would you delete a file from the LaCie, i.e putting this file in the G4's trash and emptying it, without having the LaCie connected to the machine which is supposed to do the job ?
Are the files well copied on you desktop or do you have an error message at the copy level ?
Regards
Philippe

Hi, Phillipe:
I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. Yes, I'm the admin of the G4 and the laptop. What happened was that the laptop suffered a hard drive problem and I used the LaCie to back up whatever files I could before we had to rewrite the disk. But now I need to shed those files and I've been able to delete everything *but* the Macintosh HD folder. (Which I suspect is just my user folder.)
For a while we were working on the theory that perhaps if I connected the laptop back up to the LaCie that I would be able to delete those files. But since the hard drive was rewritten, perhaps that too is irrelevant. It seems like it shouldn't matter in any regard...data is data, especially if you're the admin (and only user!) of all of the computers/hard drives involved.
I did try one other trick yesterday; I thought, well, perhaps if I copy this onto the G4 and *then* try to delete it from there, maybe that will work. But it won't let me copy the file there, either; I get the message that I don't have sufficient privileges to perform that task.
I hope that clears thngs up...clear as mud? Thanks again for your help!
With kind regards,
Amy

So, in summary, you have backup files from the LaCie to the new drive of your latop and you want to delete the last files on the LaCie ? Right ?
If so, what not thinking to reinitialise/reformat the LaCie ?
The Macintosh HD folder is the top level an contains, among other, the system; you cannot manipulate it like this
The best solution to backup a drive to another -and keep the copy functionnal as far as rights&privileges are concerned- is to clone it with tools like
* SuperDuper
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDup...scription.html
* CarbonCopyCloner
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
When you backuped this Macintosh HD from you defective laptop drive to the LaCie, how do you do this ? Simple drag-n-drop ? Don't you face the same warnings/errors on permissions as you face now in the reverse operation ?
yes your are admin of both machines, surely with the same name but for Unix, the two admin have not totatlly the same rights&permissions.
Or it would be a luck that they will have the same rights !
Have you try the Batchmod test ?

Hi, Philippe:
I did try the Batchmod download (very cool product!) but, alas, it did not work.
Yes, I have backup files on the LaCie that I'd like to delete. The LaCie also has backup files from other machines so I'm not sure I could reformat it without potentially damaging those files. (Could I? Never tried that before.) When I backed up the laptop to the LaCie, yes, I just dragged and dropped. It was too easy, obviously! :-) I guess I didn't realize Unix would be so hard on me!
Thanks for all of your help. From now on, I guess I will just clone things with those programs you suggested to avoid this problem in the future. Do I understand that correctly?
Thanks again!
With kind regards,
Amy

yes, you understand well
About
> The LaCie also has backup files from other machines
No, if you reformat, you'll erase everything. You must create partitions on the LaCie (and yes, when you will create them, the drive will be erased), each of them receiving the files of a specific machine; for the partition which will receive the clone of your hard drive, the partition's size must (of course) be at least the size of your internal hard drive
