Hello!
Current setup:
ibook G4 / Tiger
Wireless to Router and Print server.
Deskjet 840c connected to parallel port on printserver
Laserjet 1010 connected to USB port.
Both using Appletalk
Both set to Binary
Situation is that I am able to scan the Laserjet 1010, but not the Deskjet 840C.
Both my windows hosts can print on both printers.
I'm not sure why Tiger can't see the Deskjet.
Any tips anyone?
Can OS X print via parallel port?

Which print server model is it?
ruffyleaf - May 2, 2006 - 8:12 pm
WPS54GU2 print server (1 USB port, 1 Parallel port)
WRT54G wireless router
I tried adding an IP printer with
ort# but I think that doesn't work.

I recommend you use IP printing > LPD or IPP rather than appletalk. Queue name is required for both of these protocols - I think P1 is the parallel and P2 is the USB port queue name.
And don't forget you must use the HP Deskjet 840C, Gimp-Print driver - the HP-provided driver doesn't do network printing.
Does this help?

I tried doing that as well.
Adding an IP printer, like this "IP Address:1" But I'm not sure if that bypasses the print server.
Because even though the communication to this address is VALID, i am still unable to print.
Also, I have selected the exact driver you mentioned.
hmmm....kind of at a lost for solutions at the moment....

Forgot to mention.
I tried installing HPIJS inside.
After installing that, somehow.....I can't use Appletalk to view my other printer.
I installed that because i needed the driver for the Laserjet 1010. If I experience problems there, it's quite understandable. But on the Deskjet840, I really ought not to have any problems, as the driver is also supported on MAC OS X.
In the office, I am using Bonjour to search for printers. That seems to work better.
Is there a compatibility issue with the print server? I logged in to the print server, and checked everything. Seems to be all good.
What I'm thinking, is on the print server, I have to specifically mention that I will be using TCP/IP to print. Not appletalk. And configure that for Port 1(parallel).
Thanks for your help gsahli. Anything I may be doing wrong?

To clarify: If the LJ 1010 is connected via USB, you aren't using appletalk. Appletalk is only available over ethernet/wireless.
Let me run through this again.
In Printer Setup Utility, click ADD. In the printer browser window that comes up, click IP printer at the top. Select LPD from the top pull-down menu. Enter the print server's queue name in Queue Name - I think it is P1 (p-one) for the parallel port on your model. Enter the print server's IP address - no :1 or anything else. Select model - Deskjet 840C, Gimp-Print, or hpijs/foomatic.
Finish and try it.
Does it work?

Hello Gsahli,
Ok, I will give that a try.
The queue name makes a difference? I thought that was client specific? nothing related on the print server side?
nontheless, will give it a shot! thanks for your help!
gsahli - May 4, 2006 - 7:45 am
The queue name AT THE SERVER is required to be entered in the client's Printer Setup. The queue name on the client will be different, and is only important when the client becomes the server for a different client.
Think of it this way. The LPD (IPP, too) protocols are meant to allow a server with one IP address serve many printers. So the protocol requires a queue name to identify "which printer" at that IP address.
On Windows, the CD "driver" software enters this for you.

Gsahli!
Thanks for the help mate! it works.
However, the Laserjet 1010 doesn't work. Even with the HPIJS foomatic driver installed.

but that's a different story!
Thanks again mate!
Cheers!
MAx.

For the LJ 1010, did you also install ESP ghostscript? It is required with hpijs.
ruffyleaf - May 4, 2006 - 6:55 pm
Thanks mate.
YEs I did installed ESP ghostscript.
I realised that at the Printer/Fax screen, the 840C checkbox is BLUE in colour, whereas the LJ 1010, it's grey and 'unshaded'. Does that mean that the driver is not installed properly?
Steps I will take (correct me if I am on the wrong track)
1. Un-install HPIJS.
2. RE-install ESP Ghostscript and verify ESP ghostscript is installed and working correctly.
3. Re-install HPIJS
4. Re-configure LJ1010 using TCP/IP, with the steps you had provided, including the Queue name P2. (strange though, appletalk detects the LJ1010, but not the other one still)
ruffyleaf - May 4, 2006 - 7:23 pm
hmmm... still doesn't work.
I must have made a mistake somewhere....
gsahli - May 4, 2006 - 9:15 pm
Grey and unshaded means the printer is the default.
I just figured out you meant that the 1010 is connected by USB to the Print Server -- oh-oh... It is possible that L1 is the queue name for the USB port on that server.
I'm running out of ideas here. Try appletalk again :-)
