Is there a way to stop MacOSX 10.5.1 from showing thumbnail previews instead of generic file icons? Since I upgraded to Leopard, instead of seeing red Adobe icons for PDFs, blue W icons for Word documents, etc, all my documents now look like little white squares and I can't tell different file types apart without looking carefully. Can I set a preference to universally switch off the previews?
Try experimenting with the view options in Finder. Click Finder in the Dock. Press ⌘J on your keyboard to "Show View Options". Uncheck the "Show icon preview" box.

Thanks... but I already had that option unchecked. The problem only occurs on the Desktop. Files on the Desktop are shown as thumbnails on the desktop itself, even though they're shown as generic icons when I use Finder to view the desktop's contents as a folder.
Have you tried clicking on your Desktop and then press ⌘J? Once again you will have to uncheck the "Show icon preview" box.

Yes! That's it. Thanks. Now I don't have to squint at the desktop.
