I am trying to repair my permissions using the Disk Utility ap on OSX 10.3.9

It runs for only a few seconds when I get the notification

"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."

What might be the cause of this error?

Hi sfbpo!

Disk Utility is being stubborn huh? Let's try this first.

Go to your Users>Library>Preference folder. In that folder is a file named:
com.apple.diskutility.plist Drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash. Reboot your Mac and try running Disk Utility again.

If that doesn't do the job, then insert the system disk that came with your Mac, hold down the C key and keep holding it down untl you see the Apple logo appear on the Desktop. You can use Disk Utility from the Utility menu that way.
If you have upgraded your operating system from Jaguar (10.2.x) to your current 10.3.9, make sure and use the 10.3.9 system disk!

If you need further assistance, please reply.

Actually, I just found the answer.

Upgrading to iTunes 6.0.4 has caused the problem. It is stated on the Apple site:

Mac OS X 10.3: Repair Disk Permissions "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool..." alert
After installing iTunes 6.0.2 or later in Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.9, Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions may not finish, and the following alert appears in the Disk Utility window:

(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)

Workaround

Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):

iTunes.pkg
iTunes4.pkg

You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.

Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
