I have been sent attachments by email in the .doc format which my imac has not been able to translate. Is there any way of viewing these at all?

I take it you do not have Office 98?
If you do, just drop the document on the word 98 icon.
If not, try Clarisworks Office or (if the document is just text) try BBedit lite - it is free and opens documents very quickly.
If you do not have it, it is on MacAddict CD's (or other magazine CD's or I could give you the URL.
Let me know if you want it.
