I have in my powerbook g4,

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E:

Firmware Revision: DMP2
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No

My computer does not recognize the TDK DVD+R DL disc when it is inserted.
I've seen a lot of discussion in forums from 2005 where people thought this writer, the so-called "Super-Drive" could burn double layer dvds. The issue seemed to be a firmware update which I cannot find anywhere. Is there any way to burn a double layer dvd with this drive and if not, what external and internal machines would you recommend? Thank you. pmb

You would see +R DL if your burner was capable of burning dual layer discs. I am fairly certain this is not a feature can be enabled by a firmware update. Superdrive was Apple's description of a drive that could burn both CDs and DVDs.

A far as I can ascertain only the Macbook Pro is the only Apple laptop which has dual layer burning capabilities without replacing the drive.

Thank you, Tommo!
I have an answer for the first part of my question and I am hoping you folks can answer the second part; "if not, what external and internal machines would you recommend?" (to burn dual layer DVD's with my powerbook G4) Thank you. pmb

Lacie do a Dual Layer Firewire Drive for under £100 if you are here in the UK. Just go to the Apple store web page and look under storage. If it is available there you know it will work with a Mac. I find Lacie stuff very reliable.
