When I I click on something I want to look at on a web site the download box comes up and shows the item being downloaded. It then appears on the desktop But when I click on it the message box comes up saying--There is no default application to open this--"document title" I have gone through all sorts of trials in the finder, but with no success. My problem is being a bit of a beginner I just do not understand what the message means.
Most downloads compress their files so they are such a huge download. The program that it is probably looking for is one called Stuffit. You can get a free download of the expander version of the program at:
http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/index.html
(Just as an FYI, the normal program that I think is about $50 lets you compress files yourself as well. If you don't need to do that then you don't need to buy anything.)
Please let me know if this helps or if I can be of further assistance.

Thank for your response Leigh. My computer does have Stuffit Expander. My book tells me that this should automatically open compressed files. However as far as I can remember the files I am refering to do not have a suffix so presume they are not compressed. I shall have to check this next time it happens. when I open Stuffit Expander it tells me to drag files to the box but this does nothing visible. Is there something I shoud do when I open Stuffit?
Regards Bill
Stuffit should open up the files if they are compressed by just dragging the files onto the icon so it is quite possible that they aren't compressed files. Next time you download something and it gives you that message, send me an e-mail at
leigh@matchframevideo.com. I'll take a look at it and we'll see just what kind of file it is and what program you would need.
There is at least one other program that I can think of that is pretty generic that you would need. Do you know if you have Acrobat Reader on your computer? That's also a widely used format. The files usually end with a .pdf extension.
Anyway, check that you have Acrobat Reader.
If you don't, here is where to go to get it:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If that still doesn't help, e-mail me the website you are trying to download from and I'll take a look at it.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
