Description:
The U.S. Geological Survey is scanning & converting many of their ground maps, including Topographic maps, to DIGITAL RASTER GRAPHICS that can be procured on a CD-ROM.

According to a USGS employee I should be able to open these files with any application that can read & print TIFF files. He suggested that I download a sample file from their Web Page (http://www.emtc.nbs.gov/) to see if this source of topos is what I'm looking for before I buy the CD-ROMs. Well, after downloading a file I tried to open it with Clarisworks 5.0 and again with ClarisDraw with no success, even after decompressing the file with ZipIt.

My computer is a 233 G3 minitower using OS 8.0. Do you know off hand what I'm doing wrong or what I need in order to open this type of file? Will I need to install SoftWindows or hopefully a less expensive shareware program to make my system compatible?

I'm at a loss and will appreciate any words of wisdom that you might have.

Thanks,
Lane Mead

Lane,
Hi, my name is Ed. I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your question. My email address is
Before you do anything drastic (or expensive) why don't you download a shareware utility named Graphic Converter from ZDNet Mac Download at

It will open just about any graphics format you can think of.
You will not have to pollute your nice G3 with ... Windows (ugh).
Good luck,
ed
