2 questions:

1) Each time I attempt to download something, it never works. I get to the part where I double click on the icon that looks like a piece of paper folded in the top right hand corner, and open it using stuffit expander. It seems like something is happening, and then everything goes back to normal just like it was before I first clicked it. What am I doing wrong?

2) Each time I try to open other things, I often get the message that it is unable to do it because "the application program that created it could not be found". Does this have something to do with stuffit expander too?

Please let me know about these two things if you can, I am getting very discouraged with my iMac, and will throw this thing away in a heartbeat.

A third question, how do I know what model I have between Mac OSx or a Mac os9?

Last question first - If you want to know what version of the Mac OS you have - Click on the Apple, and choose About This Mac. This info window will tell you exactly which version you are running.

Second question - I need some more details. What type of files are you trying to open? You may be attempting to open a file that is not a document at all. give me a couple of examples of what will always fail to open for you, OK?

First Question - You can open Stuffit, and change the preferences so the file is expanded in the same folder where you have downloaded it. This is also a hint - Move (or copy) any downloaded file to a folder that you have created just for this purpose. Then when you open that downloaded file with Stuffit, the 'unstuffed' file will remain in the same folder.
Keep in mind that some types of files, such as .exe files, may not work at all on a Mac, as they may be designed for Windows.
Let me know how it goes..

Thanks for responding. But I pretty much have no idea what you are talking about.

2nd question- OK, some of the files do say .exe, but others say .wmv and they don't work.

1st question- I just tried to open another thing that looks like a piece of plain paper folded at the top right, this one is labeled Limewiremac.bin, and this doesn't work

You asked about the version of Mac OS that you are using on your system (I think that is what you asked), and clicking on About this Mac will show you which version you have.

If you see the message "the application program that created it could not be found" when you try to open a document that you have downloaded. it's likely that you have downloaded something that cannot work on a Mac, such as a Windows app of some kind.
You said that you had a file named limewiremac.bin. and could not open that.
If you want LimeWire, you should download that from a better site. It will usually come as a file named LimeWireOSX.dmg - so, I think you were trying to download the limewire for Classic, which you really don't need. Go to this page - http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml
.exe files won't and can't work.
.wmv will require you to download and install Windows Media Player from the Microsoft web site. This is not Windows, so Microsoft software does not come with the system. You will find that SOME .wmv files still won't play because you are not running Windows with its built-in Media Player.
check out www.versiontracker.com for a huge number of Mac software of every kind.
hang in there, the Mac will make it all worth it...
