Hi.
I'm not a Mac user, I use Win 95, however, I e-mailed some mac software to a friend that has a Powerbook 180. I was told if he downloaded these files (.*.hqx extension) and drag and drop them into his stuffit expander, that these files would be installed.
He tried this and got gobbly gook instead. could you please advise how he can download and install these files to his Mac succesffully?

Hi Rachel,
The problem is not with your machine or with his Mac (your instructions, for the most part are correct). The problem is most likely with how your program and his are handling attachments.
Bear with me as I try to explain how this works. Email can only send text. When you send a file (image, or formatted document, audio, or whatever), your email program converts this file into a text file. The program used by the person receiving the file then converts the text file back into the file it originally was. The problem occurs when the email sending the file doesn't use the same method to convert the file as the program receiving the file uses to convert it back. If this occurs you get "gobbly gook"!!
The easiest way around this is to be certain that both your friend and you use identical email programs. If your both use Eudora Pro (This isn't always true with the lite versions), or if you both use Netscape, then the programs may use the same methods.
Your email program might give you some options of how to encode the file before it is mailed. Figure out what this is and let your friend know. Hopefully his email program will allow him to decode using the same method.
If you can let me know what programs you are both using, I might be able to make a suggestion on how to proceed. On the Mac side both Claris Emailer and EudoraPro offer a number of ways to decode attachments. If your friend isn't using one of these, perhaps he should. A lite version of Claris Emailer comes with MacOS system 7.6 and up.
