How to watch movies depends on what format they are. Personally I watch:

WMV and mov in QuickTime

AVI, mpeg and everything else in VLC.

For now you can just try dragging the file onto the icon of QuickTime (either in you Applications folder or in the dock if you have it there).

Tp permanently change what program a file type open in, select a file of the type you are dealing with and do File>Get Info. From the 'open with' section select the program you want to use, them click 'change all' and all files of that type should open in the selected program.

I also suggest you download Flip4Mac which allows Quicktime to play WMV files (windows media player is no longer supported for Mac and Flip4Mac is the microsoft mandated alternative), also get Perian which lets Quicktime play most DivX and avi files. Finally I heartily recommend getting the VLC player which plays almost anything and has many useful features for troublesome files.

Let me know if you need more help,
