Description:
Whenever I download I get confused about what to do next. Is there a good source that might explain that process to me? Here is my confusion: As I download I get a message saying essentially: "You can do something (?) with this file using "StuffIt Expander." Fine. Here's where my confusion starts.
I look on my desktop and I've got a bunch of new things: 1. Sometimes a blue folder
2. A Diamond thing with an icon of something that looks like a vise squeezing a letter "H" (?) and 3. A document (rectangular greyish thing with the upper right corner "dog eared." Not knowing what the heck I am doing I begin to double click on everything. That's when the confusion really kicks in. Suddenly I have multiple copies of everything I originally had on the desktop right after the download, only with "filename.1," .2,.3 etc. depending on how many times I clicked on everything.
Unlike me, can you succinctly tell me what to do right after a download with these things on my desktop?
Thanks a bunch.
Peace

Re: download basics:
1) You wrote: "As I download I get a message saying essentially: "You can do something (?) with this file using "StuffIt Expander."
At this prompt, select "Save to Disk" (if that is an option). Otherwise, click "Save", "OK" or whatever the default option is to proceed with the download.

2) Make sure that the download is 100 percent complete (check your download progress bar) before double-clicking (trying to expand or open) the downloaded file. Depending on your settings (ie. browser configuration/preferences), Stuffit may immediately launch and expand the file when the download is complete. A status bar appears when Stuffit Expander decompresses the file. Just wait for the process to complete.

Compressed and binhexed files have suffixes after their names: .hqx, .sit, bin.
A stuffed file would have a name like: "filename.sit" or "filename.hqx". The expanded, decoded file or application would just have the "filename" without the suffix. It will also have a different icon (ie. an application icon, folder, etc.).

After your download is complete, look on your desktop (it always helps if your desktop is not too cluttered) and see if a folder or file appears bearing the name of the downloaded file without any suffix. You can then "open" the new file or application by double-clicking it.
If "all" you see is an .hqx or .sit version of the file, then you need to first expand that file by double-clicking it: this will automatically launch Stuffit Expander.

Once your download is expanded, you can either discard the "filename".sit or filename.hqx file or save it as a backup copy.
All you need is the expanded file. If you mistakenly double-click one of the compressed files after your download is already unstuffed, you will create duplicates.
