Hi. I've made a backup of a bought DVD as a disk image using Toast. The disc image is 5.5gb in size but now I can't burn it to blank DVD as Toast and Popcorn say it can't compress the disk image. Anyone know why?

Toast also won't burn a DVD from the extracted files - says it can't handle the file!! :-((

Paul, welcome on macosx.com
The disc image is an image ready to be burned; if the size is over 4.5 Gb (the limit size of a standard DVD-R), you need a double layer DVD - and compatible burner - to put it on a blank DVD-R Double Layer

But, why don't you use Popcorn on the original DVD to suppress extras/soundtracks/subtitles: just select MainTitle; select Options and remove unwanted stuff

many thanks for response. Unfortunately double-layer DVD discs are still very expensive and Popcorn won't handle the disk image OR even do anything with the original DVD disc.

Popcorn won't suppress extras etc to get the movie to fit and it indicates it can't compress the disk image at all to fit onto a standard 4.7gig DVD :-(

?
How do made the original backup ?

Could try MacTheRipper to try to rip the DVD onto the hard drive (a VIDEO_TS folder; rip all the DV = default option of MTR; MTR will clean the protection), then use Popcorn -VIDEO_TS input option- to burn the new one

Many thanks Philippe. I had already made an unprotected backup using MacTheRipper to make a VIDEO_TS folder. Neither Toast 7 or Popcorn will do anything with the Video_TS folder :-(

Message says cannot handle this type of file!! All very puzzling as I have made backups of other DVDs I have bought. The Viedo_TS folder will run OK using the Mac DVD Player.

Strange.
The only equivalent problem I face was due to a DVD "home made" on Windows which contains a Divx encoded avi file: neither MTR,PocCorn or equivalent software was able to decode.

So, Paul, could you explain me which procedure you follow to create a backup of these retail store DVDs ?

Hello again. I just used MacTheRipper to extract the main film only (no extras) and the file size comes to 5.17gb. The VIDEO_TS folder then contained 11 items - VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB,VTS_01_2.VOB,VTS_01_3.VOB,VTS_01_4.VOB,VTS_01_5.VOB,VTS_0 1_6.VOB.
Toast then says the the folder is too big to burn to a standard DVD and Popcorn says "Popcorn cannot handle the contents of this VIDEO_TS folder.

The DVD movie is an ex-rental disc - can't think that should make any difference as I had the same messages copying a different film.

My last idea. Either
* one of the .vob files is corrupted.
* a PopCorn problem

So to be sure, could use MTR and Popcorn on a new rent movie DVD to see if the problem still exists ?
When using MTR, extract all the DVD (note the main title) and use Popcorn (Options) to eliminate unwanted soundtracks/subtitles

(note; if Tiger, do you have the last 1.03 Popcorn update ?)

OK. Basically I just extracted everything from the DVD using MacTheRipper and then dropped the extracted folder onto Toast 7 to make a backup to DVD. Everyting then just autocompressed where required or just copied with no problems. Nice and simple!! Popcorn not needed as Toast 7 has built in the Popcorn feature of selecting just main movie etc or compressing to fit everything onto one 4.7gb DVD Disc.

Thanks again
