Hi
My technical level is not too high so please keep it fairly simple.
I was wondering how i can easily burn a DVD. Is there a simple way to just do it in a few clicks? I want to burn a DVD movie onto a blank DVD. How do i do that with my G5? There is only one CD ROM so i guess i have to copy it to the Hard drive then burn it..
Thankyou

Bryce, welcome to macosx.com.
The simple answer is:
* if the movie dvd size is under the 4.7GB of a blank DVD-R, you can copy it. The Finder or DiskUtility cannot do this; commercial tools like Toast7 can peform the whole copy; otherwise you have to rip the DVD and put it back on ablank DVD_D
* if not, you have either to extract some parts of it before burning or compress the whole stuff before burning. Toast7 (again) can do it in the background. Otherwise, again, you have to rip the DVD, then
**extract parts to go under 4.7 and burn
**compress the whole extraction to go under the 4.7 limit (Toast 7 or Popcorn)
Last but not least, the copy/duplicate procedure through Toast/Popcorn cannot be performed on crypted commercial DVDs.;except if you can get rid of the protection..
Now, in details...
Ripping a DVD allow you to clone the entire DVD on your hard drive or to extract a
part of it: the main title, with or without subtitles, with or without foreign languages
soundtracks, ... When the DVD is ripped on the disk, you can burn a copy of it
The
http://www.ripdifferent.com/ site is a good reference of the major Mac programs
in this field.
A. Ripping, then burning
===============
Ripping the DVD
--------------
One of the most pwerfull mac software for ripping DVDs is a freeware:
Mac The Ripper (MTR)
MTR allows you to:
* clone the full disc or only extract a part of it (main title, chapter,..)
* get rid of Macrovision protection, region lock and most of the encryption
protection (including Sony Archos protection system)
Viewing the ripped DVD
------------------
MTR creates a VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive containing the ripped parts of the DVD.
This folder can be opened in the Apple DVD player (File/Open a VIDEO_TS) or in VLC
Burning the DVD
-------------
(1) The ripped VIDEO_TS size is under the 4.6 limit size of a blank DVD-R
The freeware DVDImager (
http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/apples...dvdimager.html)
will create a burnable image of the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder. Even if DVDImager
is able to clone a full DVD, DVDImager cannot handle protected DVDs
Finally, we can use the burn facility of DiskUtility or Toast to burn our job onto a blank DVD
!! you must have at least twice the size of DVD to copy free on your hard drive to proceed
this manual procedure !
(2) The ripped VIDEO_TS folder is above 4.6GB -> need to compress
PopCorn (
http://www.roxio.com/en/products/popcorn/index.jhtml) is able to
* rip the DVD (extract the main title, suppress subtitles or soundtracks, ...) exactly as MTR,
however, Popcorn cannot handle protected DVDs, so MTR is to be used for ripping.
* to compress (and directly burn) the ripped results to fit in the range of 4.7G (good quality)
Toast7 (see under) can also compress the DVD
B. All-in-one
========
Toast7 (
www.roxio.com) can, in one process, copy (or extract part of a DVD), compressed them and burn them directly
However, Toast 7 cannot copy protected DVDs
Note that, beside Toast7 or PopCorn (the most sophisticated tool on the market), there are sharewares which can help you like DVDRemaster or equivalent.
As a Toast user for years, I must say that the tool's content and capability make the 90 $ cost of the program not so high to my eyes
