I just got a new ibook (with Tiger) with Superdrive with hopes of making back-up copies of my kids DVDs. I can't seem to do it with what Apple gave me. The copy writes and all that. What is the best way to do this ? What is the best software for the situation?

The best tool for this is a great program called Mac the Ripper, which you can get at Macupdate.com. This will rip your DVDs to disc. You can then use Toast to burn to DVD if no compression needed. I've been using another Roxio product called Popcorn which can recompress to DVD. So MTR to rip (it's free) and Popcorn to burn (it's $50 US).

I don't know of any freeware to compress on the the Mac.
