When I loaded a video DVD, a window popped up that I have to change the country settings in order to be able to watch the DVD. It said that I can only change this settings 4 times!
What does this mean? I am running Max Os 10.3.9 on a G4 PowerBook. Apple can't be serious about this?

Hi Ingolf,

Ok, launch your DVD software. Click where it says
DVD at the top of your screen. Click Preferences.
A preference will open. Click Disk Setup at the top.
A pop up menu will come up and you can click the
country/language you want played in the DVD. That's all that is... when you loaded the video, it just asked you
which country/language to set in your Preferences.

If you need anymore help, just post back!

Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for responding so fast.
I know already what you told me. The question for me is: What can I do if I changed the settings 4 times and want to change it again ?

Hello Ingolf,

As Carolyn is apparently busy, I will try to assist you further.

You say "Apple can't be serious about this?" I fully agree but they are just obeying the "law" which requires every DVD player to be zones, i.e. restricted to playing just discs purchased in a certain part of the world. This is very annoying to multi-cultural families who buy DVDs from various parts of the world and just want to play them without being labeled communist pirates.

The solution for stand-alone DVD players is either to buy a "zone-free" player which ignores these settings or to "de-zone" your existing player by pressing a few magic buttons on the remote control while chanting appropriate incantations ;-). In computer DVD drives, you can usually set the zone code a few times before it gets completely locked (in your case, 5 times). Fortunately computers offer us more options to work around this issue...

The first possibility is to update the firmware of your DVD drive in order to let it play discs from any zone. This is a frequent procedure and you will find relevant firmware installers by googling for your DVD model number with the keyword "dezoning". Warning: applying a DVD firmware upgrade may void your warranty and may be irreversible, so be sure to check what users have to say about a particular firmware distribution before diving in.

The second possibility is to make a zone-free copy of your foreign discs, an easy procedure thanks to the MacTheRipper utility which you can download from:
http://www.ripdifferent.com/mtr/
MacTheRipper can read DVDs from any zone even if your drive is zoned, and produce an exact copy with the zoning bits cleared. It can do many other interesting things to your DVDs too, I'll let you explore their PDF manual to find out...

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

Salut Jean-François!
Merci beaucoup pour ta reponse! Ça aide énormement. Mais est-ce que c'est pas contre la loi de copier des dvds?
Thanks a lot! I did some research myself. Actually, some people I asked think that the newest generation computer drives don't even have this stupid restriction anymore. But I couldn't find any further information about this from any officail sites. Personally, I don't want to screw up the frimware on my computer. I already made some bad experiences. But I will check out your alternative solution :-)

I really apreciate your service!

Salut Ingolf,
