INTRODUCTION
I am a producer for a film production company and my usual freelance editor has taken leave (for family reasons) for the next month, but unfortunately I have a deadline.

He recently created a DVD project (using PC – specs below) for one of our clients and burned it to DVD. Now I need to reproduce copies of the client's work (a 90 sec promo clip) but wish to change the title menu information.

I don't think he has enabled any copy protection software since he would have to edit the footage himself at a later stage.

PROCEDURES
I have copied all the files off the DVD onto my G5 Hard-drive (see specs below) and they are named as follows:

VIDEO_TS.BUP (12 KB)
VIDEO_TS.IFO (12 KB)
VIDEO_TS.VOB (12 KB)

VTS_01_0.BUP (20 KB)
VTS_01_0.IFO (20 KB)

VTS_01_0.VOB (96 KB) [Title menu image and viewable in Quicktime]
VTS_01_1.VOB (41 MB) [Video footage and viewable in Quicktime]

Could the audio file be hidden on the original DVD and I have failed to copy them to my hard-drive as I cannot find/open it in any of the above files?

I am not really bothered about changing the title menu page and if the video just played as soon as you put it into the machine that would be OK!

DUPLICATION ATTEMPTS
1) I burned all the files back onto another 4xDVD-R (unbranded).
The DVD player did not permit the files to be played but on one occasion the film played all the way through with the sound but I have not yet been able to establish which circumstances have changed.

2) I tried to import the files into iDVD.
Would not allow option of Importing Video files and gave following message on attempt to import audio files:
Unsupported File Type: MPEG Video

3) I tried to drag and drop files into iDVD map but files would not copy across .

4) I tried to Import the files into DVD Studio Pro 3.
Received Message:
ALERT: Import Assets
Could not Import 7 Files.
The Files are not supported.

5) I burned the files onto a CD-R 80 52x (Phillips)
Again all the files appeared on the disc as expected but would not play in DVD player (MAC), Power DVD (PC) or Real Player (Version 10 PC).

Dear Dawn,

My name is Vinko and I will attempt to answer your question.

First of all you cannot simply copy files from a DVD to your computer to edit it.

Secondly to duplicate a DVD without changing its content you can use the commercial software Toast to duplicate the DVD. It is the best CD/DVD burning software on the Mac. Alternatively you can also check out the freeware/shareware tools also available.

The iDVD program expects to receive QuickTime Movies or DV files as imports, so you cannot just drag any part of the content from your DVD into iDVD. You can use the commercial program "DVDxDV" to "rip" the content (video and audio) from the DVD into a QuickTime Movie which you can then drag into iDVD.

I hope this helps.
