zd21, welcome on macosx.com

yes, that's true: the combination of Apple's DVD player and the drive of PB are built in a way that you can only change 5 times the region to fit to the one from which the DVD comes.

They're several ways to bypass this:

* flash the drive : not easy and damageable -forget it-

* find a hack which lock the countdown -never hear of such a software which works on mac

* use VLC (www.viedeolan.org) player which ignore region; more powerfull than the Apple's stuff; do not forget to set, in your SystemPreferences /CD&DVD, a "Ignore" condition when a movie DVD is inserted
But...but sometimes VLC has problem with so called "super-regioned" DVD. And VLC cannot play Macromedia / Sony Arkoos protected DVDs

..and so ..

* last but not least, ripping the DVD onto your hard drive (through for instance MacTheRipper): around 20' for this task, but playing the movie will be more fluid, ... That's my way of playing DVDs

Hi Philippe sorry if i am asking too many questions, when you rip them to your intern hard drive, then you have to watch the movie in separate parts!!!! is there a way to watch it from your intern hard drive in one play, without going to the second scene and play it to continue the movie, except if you burn it of course, also is there a way of burning one movie dvd in two blank dvds (in case if a movie has more memory than the blank dvd you have, and you just want to burn them in two dvds instead of bying a big capacity dvd)? what software is good for that? and is it do able?
Thanks a lot for your help Philip.

(1) with MTR, in FullDiscExtraction mode, the whole DVD is ripped onto a VIDEO_TS folder on your internal drive; drag this folder to the VLC player (or Open Video_TS menu in Apple's DVD player) and you can watch the movie at a glance.

(2) You have to cut the movie into parts and burn each part on a separate blank DVD
MPEG StreamClip http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
can edit a movie
I never use such a clipping tool; if fact, with Toast7 (commercial), the "Fit to DVD" compression option allows me to burn a ripped movie bigger than the DVD-R size with some lost in quality; Toast 7 prompts you the percentage of lost quality; up to 30%, some very small quality change in the image; up to 40% acceptable except in presence of high speed scenes (for instance as in Matrix Reloaded)

(3) my way of ripping
a. ripp all the DVD (including all languages, soundtracks and bonus) with MTR
b. select the accurate soundtracks, subtitles, reject bonus, .... within Toast7 VideoTab pane options; then burn with Toast

..well, Toast is my favourite tool for burning and I use it since OS 9; Toast 7 comes with a lot of movie burning facilites... I cannot work on my mac with this tool ;-)

(4) some other ways

* ripping with MTR, but select in MTR the chapter, ... to have a size under 4.7GB; create a image of the movie with DVDImager; burn this image with Finder
* see http://www.ripdifferent.com/
