Inserted a dvd disk and got an error " The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" Yet only a month ago all was working just fine. Can burn to DVD and CD's. Reads CD's but not DVD's. Being I have to hard drives, one with Panther installed, I restarted in Panther and all is fine. No Problem reading DVD and CD's. All is working in Panther. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
As far as technical levels go I would consider myself fair.
OS X 10.4.4
Thank you,
Jer

Hi Jerry
Try trashing your DVD player plist preference. Go to home/library/preferences and trash the following file: com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.
make sure you sre set to launch the DVD Player for video DVD's in the System Preference CDs & DVD's Panel.
I had also read that some people are experiencing this problem because quicktime 7.0.4 was updated BEFORE upgrading to 10.4.4
this will supposedly fix the problem:
QuickTime 7.0.1 Reinstaller for QuickTime 7.0.4
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...cktime704.html
that will uninstall quicktime 7.0.4 and reinstall 7.0.1 - then after you restart run the software updater and reinstall 7.0.4

Hey Bob,
Appreciate the reply and had already trashed the plist. file. Downloaded OT 7.0.1 and to no avail. Appreciate your effort.

Next thing I would try is downloading the 10.4.4 Combo Updater and run that again;

Bob, thanks again for your interest and trouble. Sorry to report the Combo
Updater didn't do the trick. Restarted in Panther and everything still works.
So at least not all is lost.
Thanks again,
Jer

Try zapping the Pram;
Restart your machine with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down. Once you've heard the second startup chime, release the keys.
Then try a disk. If the problem remains, reset Open Firmware;
Reboot your computer while holding down Command-Option-O-F. At the prompt, type
reset-nvram and hit the Return key, then type
reset-all and hit the Return key again. Your computer will reboot.
Also, try a different brand od DVD disc.

Hi Bob,
Sorry to report I tried your suggestions with no results. Looks like there's a corrupt or missing file someplace. Really appreciate your time and help. Don't let this bug you, I'm sure other people have worse problems. Like I said, I can still reboot in Panther and read DVD's.
Thanks again,
Jer

Try launching iDVD and then try a DVD disk. This has worked for a few people on Apple's boards.
Others have reported wiping the drive and installing 10.4 fresh was the only way to fix this problem.
