Roxio Popcorn is by far the easiest and most reliable but it's not free. I've not found reliable freeware to compress a DVD; at least nothing as good as Popcorn:
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/po.../overview.html

You should avoid compression by either ripping just the main feature (just the movie) with Mac the Ripper so it will fit uncompressed on a 4.7GB DVD-R or you should get a Dual Layer DVD burner so you can do 8.5GB's of storage on DVD-DL discs. Compression results in a grainy image, loss of surround sound in some cases and occasional artifacts when there is a lot of high speed motion in the video scenes.

You can buy an external firewire Dual Layer DVD burner so you don't need to compress down to 4.7GB:

Some people are using HandBrake to rip movies specifically to keep them on a laptop hard disk for when they travel. You can compress down a movie from native DVD VIDEO_TS/ to MPEG-4 H.264 so you can take less disk space and even put it on a video iPod. http://handbrake.m0k.org/

*** Disclaimer: Don't steal movies... Only use Mac The Ripper for backups and personal use. Do not give away or sell the copies.
