I am having problems writing to DVD-r in DVD studio pro3. If I write to DVD-R media (pro-disc), it either will fail ( I hav hear the disc spinning a bizzilion MPH before it fails), or it'll finish, but nothing comes up when inserted in a DVD player or use the MAC DVD player...just a blank screen and no menu. If I write to a DVD-RW disc, it always writes sucessfully, however again, I can't play it the MAC DVD player (blank screen) but can in a regular DVD player. THEN, if I make a copy of the DVD-RW on my DELL PC, to the DVD-r (PRO-DISC), It is always sucessful everywhere. So what I have to do is write to DVD-RW and then make a copy EVERY TIME.

Any Thoughts?

Hi jereme,

I am Tom and will be assisting you

Are you having problems writing to the DVD-r discs using other software. Can you write to the dvd-r using idvd, itunes or Toast (if you have it) etc.?

Have you tried using a different brand of DVD-r. It is not unusual to discover a brand that just doesn't work for your computer?

Have a think/an experiment and get back to me

Regards

Tom

thanks for using macosx.com

Thanks for your suggestions. I took 4 quicktime videos, and put them into idvd. Videos are 10 minutes in length...total 45 minutes of video. I tried to burn the video to my blank DVD-r media (pro-disc), and it wrote sucessfully, but the menu buttons would not work...no functionality. I tried this disc in my set top DVD player, andthe same problem occured.

I then tried to burn the SAME project again, on a blank Pro-Disc. It failed, with the following error message: "Recording device reported the media error. Write error, (0X0c, 0X00)

My next test will be to burn on other blank DVD media.

I look forward to your reply

Hi jereme,

So far, I am suspicious that your blank media is not suitable for the job. Media is quite a contentious issue and there is much debate as to what "the best" brand is. "the best" depends on lots of factors including what speed you burn at, the disk burner you have, and ultimately, what it is going to play on! Always use a reputable manufacturer with a good band. examples are Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, TDK, and others. unfortunately just using good brand, expensive discs is no guarantee things will work well but its a good start!

Try burning at a slower speed too. if you are using 4x discs try burning at 2x.

Can you read the mpeg2 files directly off the disk? Do this by opening the disk from the desktop (quit dvd player etc if it opens automatically) and open up the video.ts folder. Drag a movie file to quicktime player and see if it plays. You will need the MPEG2 player pluggin for quicktime but I think you get this with DVD studio pro.

You say the menu buttons don't function. Are you sure you have set these
up correctly in idvd. I am just covering all areas here.

Also just to check, what computer are you using and what version of OS? Is it the standard internal dvd burner you are using in your mac or do you have a third party external drive?

Have you tried burning data to DVD-r? Do this in the same way you would burn a data cd. If you get errors doing this as well then it is either the media at fault or you may have a faulty drive.

As you say you are doing, I'd try a couple of different brands first and see how things go.

Lots of questions, but I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this soon!

keep me informed

regards

Tom

Hi tom,

thank you so much for taking the time with my little problem. it is appreciated!

i'll address your message one at a time, with my responce in all caps

i got some memorex, and some jvc blank disc's. the jvc disc burned sucessfully and plays right away in the mac this is good news and is leading me to believe my roblem is the media. the memorex dvd also burned sucessfully, and works in the mac dvd player. interesting note: they are both 8x, however i could hear the jvc burn as a bizillion mph, where the memorex sounded like it was burning at a notmal speed...any thoughts?

try burning at a slower speed too. if you are using 4x discs try burning at 2x.

i do not know how to adjust my burning speed.

i can't but i think it is because i do not have the plug-in. i can say this, the disc's that works (coppied from the dell computer) has the same file structure as does the dvd-r that just comes up blank. file structure meaning i can get into the video.ts folder, and see files...but they are all pretty small files. how do i get the plug in?

you say the menu buttons don't function. are you sure you have set these

yes...when i preview in idvd, they all work fine...by the way, i don't have toast

also just to check, what computer are you using and what version of os? is it the standard internal dvd burner you are using in your mac or do you have a third party external drive?

mac g5 dual 2ghz with 2.5gig ram. 8x superdrive that it came with.. max osx jaguar updated

have you tried burning data to dvd-r? do this in the same way you would burn a data cd. if you get errors doing this as well then it is either the media at fault or you may have a faulty drive.

no

as you say you are doing, i'd try a couple of different brands first and see how things go. i did...it helpd

Sounds to me we have found the answer - your original media was not up to scratch. I would recommend you use 4x media. This is not to say that 8x media does not work its just you have a better chance of compatibility with 4x media. The issue of compatibility is a frustrating one. I hate to say this but now you are getting good burns the will be DVD players out there that just wont play your disc even though most players and computers do. Often a different brand will allow the player to read the disc while stopping other, previously working dvd players from working! (can you tell I've had a lot fun in this dept!)

I'd be happy using 8x for data back-up and for use just with my computer but for dvd player use I always stick to 4x.

I don't think you can set idvd to burn at different speeds - my mistake. You can do this in itunes via preferences which was my confusion!

If you'd find it useful to play MPEG2 via quicktime, the MPEG2 enabler can be found in the apple store online. its $19.

The fact you have a recent computer is good. DVD writers in the earlier machines were a little less reliable. I'd strongly recommend you upgrade to to the latest OS. You'd notice a significant improvement in many areas!

Its interesting that you got things working with DVDRW disks as these are notorious for causing problems!

Its always worth experimenting with different brands of disc (and different speed ratings).

If you need more help feel free to get back to me.

Happy burning!

regards

Tom
