how to save a dvd movie on the hard disk.
And how to copy it on a dvd and make it palyable in the player?
Nav, welcome to macosx.com
I suppose you want to speak about the ripping process of a DVD ?
Ripping a DVD allow you to clone the entire DVD on your hard drive or to extract a part of it: the main title, with or without subtitles, with or without foreign languages soundtracks, ...
When the DVD is ripped on the disk, you can burn a copy of it [A].
The
http://www.ripdifferent.com/ site is a good reference of the major Mac programs in this field.
I detail hereafter one free and one commercial way to rip a DVD and for each of these solutions, the main advantages and disadvantages
The free solution
Ripping the DVD
One of the most pwerfull mac software for ripping DVDs is a freeware: Mac The Ripper (MTR)
MTR allows you to:
* clone the full disc or only extract a part of it (main title, chapter,..)
* get rid of Macrovision protection, region lock and most of the encryption protection (including Sony
Archos protection system) [b] [C]
Viewing the ripped DVD
MTR creates a VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive containing the ripped parts of the DVD. This folder can be opened in the Apple DVD player (File/Open a VIDEO_TS) or in VLC [D]
Burning the DVD
The freeware DVDImager (
http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/apples...dvdimager.html) will create a burnable
image of the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder. Even if DVDImager is able to clone a full DVD, DVDImager cannot handle protected DVDs
Finally, we can use the burn facility of DiskUtility to burn our job onto a blank DVD
This free method has two main disadvantages:
* the final size of the image of the DVD to be burnt must in the valid range of a DVD-R: 4.7G !
* you must have at least twice the size of DVD to copy free on your hard drive to proceed this manual procedure !
The commerical way (80$)
PopCorn (
http://www.roxio.com/en/products/popcorn/index.jhtml) is able to
* rip the DVD (extract the main title, suppress subtitles or soundtracks, ...) exactly as MTR
* to compress (and directly burn) the ripped results to fit in the range of 4.7G
However, Popcorn cannot handle protected DVDs, so MTR is to be used for ripping.
Remarks
[A] Creating a copy a legally bought commercial DVD may be forbidden in some countries
[b] Freing protections of a commercial DVD, even for a personal copy of a legally bought DVD, may be forbidden in some countries
[C] MTR has sometimes great difficulties to get rid of of Sony Archos protection
[D] VLC (
www.videolan.org) is a the most powefull freeware viewer of movies on Mac. This soft is able to handle much more formats the Apple DVD Player (and its Quicktime layer) can handle.
Hope this help you
