My dvd burner burns with no problems but the dvd once its burned will not mount after you take it out of the caddy. Is the dvd burner dead?

Thanks for getting back to so fast. All the DVD's in the last month that i have been burning will burn but wont mount after they are burned. I use Toast 6.09 and have been using a mac for over 20 years. I took the burned dvds' to a friends and they all mounted so i think the laser is shot on the dvd except if its a dvd is from a glass master then they mount. So i ordered a new dual layer dvd today. Its the weirdest the thing the cdrw works fines but the dvd is worthless at this point. I cant update to tiger

Is this DVD the Super Drive that comes with most Mac models? What have you installed in the last month since this happened?
What model Mac are you using? What OS version are you running? What version iDVD do you have installed on your computer?
Double check in System Preferences>CDs & DVDs. At the very bottom of that pane is When you insert DVD - make sure that Open IDVD player is selected.

i'm using a g5 1.6, 2 gigs of ram os 10.3.7 idvd ver 5. why would i need idvd to open when i used toast to burn all my dvd before this incident occured with no problems and the dvds all open on another g5 with no problems and toast is on that computer as well!I dont use idvd for anything unless i'm making a video from a camera or pictures!

I needed to know if you do have iDVD installed, as it installs components to read DVDs no matter what you use to read them or burn them with. It is important to have all the specs of the computer in order to troubleshoot the problem. Did you install anything new on this computer different from your other computers?
Your G5 came with a Hardware Test CD. It maybe a stand alone CD or it could be on the Install and Restore CD. Apple changed its mind with the different models and it is hard to keep track.
Before using Apple Hardware Test, disconnect all external devices with the exception of keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers. You should also disconnect the Ethernet network cable. Print out these instructions before proceeding with the following steps.
Restart your computer from the Software Install and Restore DVD, holding down the Option key while the computer restarts. Continue to hold down the Option key until a list of available bootable devices appears.
Select Apple Hardware Test and click the right arrow. The Loading icon then appears. Loading takes about 45 seconds.
When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears, follow the onscreen instructions.
If Apple Hardware Test detects a problem, it displays an error code. Make a note of the error code before pursuing support options. If Apple Hardware Test does not detect a hardware failure, the problem may be software related.
This will tell us whether the problem is hardware or software. If the test shows a hardware failure, you need to call Apple for the repair. Depending on how old your G5 is and if you have AppleCare will depend on the price of this repair.
If there is no hardware failure, then it is time for a third party utility such as Disk Warrior.

You can start up the computer using the Disk Warrior CD, and have it repair the drive.
Without sitting in front of your computer, it is hard to pin point the exact cause, but I will stay with you to help solve this problem.

i ran the hardware cd it came back with no errors. also ran disk warrior the rebuilt the directories of the system drive and still no mounting of the dvds that i've burned and wont mount of my desktop. I here them spinning in the dvd player but wont mount. only if the dvd was a mastered copy then it mounts. i give up!!!!

Do not give up just because I will not give up.
Before we continue... I need to know if you installed any new program just before this began. This will help me determine where to look for the problem.
I want to avoid giving instructions to re install the OS. This is definitely a software problem, not a hardware - at least not from what I see.

A re-install of the system, then doing a combo update will give you fresh new files. Sometimes applying an update or installing a program will mess up the internal files within the system OS. each computer is slightly different due to the users usage and programs installed.
By the way, doing an archive and preserve install will not touch your home folder or your application folder. It is a similar install to the old Clean Install.
The only programs you would need to re-install would be any system enhancers, anti virus and Stuffit expander. If you have any firewire drives, eject them and disconnect them from the computer before doing the archive install and updates.
Start up from your Mac OS X 10.3 Panther Install Disc 1.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
When done, you need to restart the computer. Then go to the Utilities folder and open Disk Utility. Click on the second icon at the left, then click on Repair Permissions.
When done, use Software update to get the 10.3.9 update. Once that is installed, you will need to restart the computer, then run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Now those DVDs should open for you.

Check the install disk you were trying to use. Does it say DVD or CD?
In the pile of CDs that came with the G5 should be Additional Software & Hardware Test. Insert that CD and start up Hardware Test - following all the prompts.
What does the report say?
If you can not get the Hardware Test CD to work, you need to call Apple. This could be a problem that only Apple can repair.
