Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: 8600/250
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
After 2 months of fiddling I finally realized that Netscape 4.04 doesn't do anyting when I click on an email link unless I turn internet config on in the prefs. It now launches Em@iler now that I have turned on internet config once I click on a email link. The problem is I stopped using Em@iler months ago. Didn't find it of any benefit with my AOL software. It did work fine the last time I used it though. Since then I've gotten aol 4.0b and OS 8.1, now Em@iler won't even attempt to dial when I tell it to connect. It flashes the phrase "initalizing modem" then it ceases to do anything. What do I need to change? I just can't find anything wrong with the setup. Em@iler is 2.0v3. I have a Power Mac 8600/250 OS 8.1 AppleTALK set-on REMOTE ONLY. Panamedia PM17 monitor. Global Village x2. AOL 4.0 with Netscape 4.04., 96 RAM. VM on. Apple 2060 2G external drive.

Dear charliae,

Since AOL 4.0 is beta, I suspect that a file it installed is the culprit.

However instead of hunting down what extensions are causing the problem, I recommend you do the following:

Don't try to have Emailer bring up your PPP connection and then get mail. Email programs aren't very reliable at doing this. I have had similiar problems with Eudora Lite.

Instead, bring up your PPP connection manually. Simply make an alias of your dialer icon, place it on the desktop and click on it any time you want to connect. If you are using OT/PPP, use one of it's installed Applescripts to do it for you or use the control strip.

Once your connected, bring up Emailer, Netscape, or AOL. Remember Emailer can get mail from your AOL account without you having to log into AOL. Just make sure all your mail settings are correct and you don't have it trying to dial out. You will find that everything works much better.

Note: In my setup, Emailer works fine with AOL 3.0.1, I have not used AOL 4.0. Because Emailer's future is in doubt, it is unclear whether Emailer will be still be able to get mail from AOL's server, especially if AOL continues to upgrade its software on the server side.
